[Amel] 220v supply to watermaker

Richard Piller <richard03801@...>

Pat, what is the out put voltage of your gen set? If it is from Amel it is more
then likely 220v. 50 cycle...

Further the 220V from an inverter going to a 220 v high pressure pump. will NOT
strain the Alternator only the 24 v batteries.
Second if you did go to 220 v are you going to manually turn on the pump? The
control again from Amel are 24 v. you may have to do as we did and simply make
the system manual. We run the pump manually, removed the electronic control,
and put a switch and valve in it's place. When making water we leave the valve
on over board use the "test" valve on the galley wall to test the water for
solids, once under 500 PPM we switch to tank fill. Not very hard to do... it
took a bit of pluming changes behind the wall in the cockpit locker and the
addition of a switch and three way valve (one in and two out one to over board
on to tank).
Give me a call if you need more info.

As a second choice there is an SM 2000 down the dock that is canning his 220 v
Desalinatorsys. for a new one. He may be interested in selling the old unit..
let me know.
All the best
Richard on SM 209 in Annapolis FOR SALE We will be in the Chesapeake Harbor
boat show this weekend in Annapolis.

Many of you have a stronger electrical understanding than I do so.With the price
of diesel, running the genset to produce 60 liters an hour got me thinking.
Would it be possible to supply the 220v. from an inverter while you have the
engine running ?Would that overtax the engine alternator ? Thanks,
Pat SM123

Richard, I was wondering if the engine alt. had enough output to keep the
batteries up while running the watermaker pump, through an inverter, without
overstressing the alt. If the SM 2000 starts selling parts off his old
w/maker let me know. I broke the glass meter and they want $400.00 for a
replacement.Seems like a lot of money for a small glass vial. Thanks Pat

I make water most of the time my engine is running. My 60 l/h dessalator high pressure pump is 24v, unlike the 220v AC pump for the 160 l/h dessalator. I've noticed that the watermaker uses about 7A, so there is plenty of charge left to replenish the house bank. I'd like to know what amperage the 160l/h unit uses since I'd consider that if my watermaker needs to be replaced in the future.

If I remember correctly the watermaker draws about 13 amps while running and
a lot more to start the motors.

That would be a big inverter to start the watermaker. It would also draw
about 3000 watts while running , which would translate into needing about
125 amps at 12 volts to charge the batteries at 100 percent efficiency.

Please let me know how you make out sounds like a good idea. You might use
tuo inverters to run the watermaker. I (commercial here) I have a 24 volt
1500 watt to 115 volt inverter on eBay at this time, I just upgraded to a
bigger inverter for the new microwave.

Did you look into a plumbing supply for the sight tube you need. We have a
number of high pressure sight tubes that we use on our steam cleaners. 10
dollar for a piece of heavy gauge glass tubing . It comes in a 2 foot length
and you just cut it to size.

Eric, I did buy some glass tube , but could not get it to seat perfectly in
the unit.I also broke the float. This all happened because I failed to
winterize the unit in time winter a couple of years ago. Thanks for the info.

There are special gaskets that seat the high pressure tubing.

I am sure you can find a cheaper fix.

Thanks for gasket info, I will take another run at it.How about the flow
meter though, can I operate without it.Could I occasionally take a timed
measurement of how long it takes to produce a gallon. Thanks, Pat

Richard03801 <richard03801@...>

Hi Pat the flow at the bulk head valve does not represent production only sampling. Maybe the best rule of thumb may well be when you make less than 50 l as measure on the float stick change the membrane?

Maybe someone on the site has info on flow gauges and can tell where to buy a float.

How is the mast project going?

Regards and good luck

Richard, Got mast off the boat with no problems last week. You remember the
jambed main halyard problem. It turned out it was not the halyard itself but
the bolt that comes out from the furler that extends through the slot in
the mast.Apparently the downhaul was too long and when I tensioned the main
halyard I bent the bolt and drove it up inside the mast. I could never have
got it out without dropping the mast. We are now getting ready to prime spots
of corrosion with Awlgrip 545 after sanding and metal etching with acid
wash and I have decided to awlgrip the entire mast.Of course now I have to
paint the boom as well as the mizzen mast next year. We are so happy with the
results from painting the topsides and rubrails two years ago, the boat looks
new and is so easy to clean.
Thanks, Pat SM123

Thanks Pat. Let me know if you are interested in the used 220 v 50 cyc water
maker parts in the mean time I will check with Tom the unit owner.

Eric, I know nothing about Renault paint codes. We are painting the mast
with Awlgrip Eggshell, it looks to be a perfect match. There is a automotive
paint called Chroma One, I think made by Dupont. Automotive paint supply
stores could probably determine the Renault code. Chroma One is also a two
part paint, I used it to paint my last boat and it held up very well. The
awlgrip can be rolled and tipped and looks like it was sprayed on, although I
have seen some less than perfect jobs.

Eric, You may be correct, Amel may well have used a Renault paint. I said ,
I just do not have any knowledge of Renault paints and plan to use Awlgrip
which I am familiar with and think cannot be beat for a boat. I am sure Amel
could provide info on the paint.

Thanks, Pat

Captains of all Amel's
Questiom ? can we not use this very good forum for realy important inputs, and not ask question
about colour material numbers etc . I think our mail boxes are since some times full of not so interesting questions.
May be this questions shoud be answered in a bidirectional manner.
Please understand I'm not critisem this very good
