Here is what I think: When you say this capacitor has 4 leads, I assume that you are talking about 4 terminals on the capacitor. Some capacitors have 2 pairs of terminals. A quick-connection wire terminal can be connected to either side of the pair, and the other side can be used for a parallel capacitor connection. In the case of the pump, and if my memory serves me correct, the capacitor plugs into a receptacle, utilizing the terminals on the end of the capacitor. An electric start motor capacitor is used to momentarily boost the current to the motor to get it started. The two terminals on the capacitor are wired between the "load" (a/k/a positive) source and the load IN on the motor. When power is applied, the capacitor "charges" with boost voltage and delivers it momentarily to the motor. When the capacitor fails, the motor fails to start, and the breaker opens. I believe that this capacitor is a start capacitor rather than a run capacitor. That is all I know about it, and by no means am I an expert on this...much of it is a mystery that I accept. I have replaced this capacitor once in Malaysia where the country voltage is normally 250 volts, and I believe the cause of the failure. I hope this helps you. Bill,
Thanks for all the info. I still do not understand why this capacitor has 4 leads, can it be replaced with one with two leads and how is it wired? A 220v pool pump probably has about the same capacitor. The one I bought in Malaysia was not an exact fit, but had the correct specs and works fine. Buy 2 of them. Where did you get the capacitor? Also is your pump connected to the green/yellow bonding. Do you notice a lot of salt buildup at the pump hose output connection. I also notice the same kind of salt buildup ( green) where the return lines enter a larger pipe on the upper starboard side forward bulkhead in the engine room I do not know what they are for about 3 or 4 black small metal pipes draining into an empty black metal pipe Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376 Kimberlite I still do not get why there are 4 poles. _____ From: amelyachtowners@...
