[Amel] Power generator

On Nomad we have both solar 470 Watts and a mizzen wind generator- Air X. The cost benefit for the solar is a pay back of 2 years and the wind generator is 5.5 Years. The wind must be above 15 knots for it to work and as such a longer pay back period. Solar is the way to go.
We run our genset for .5 hour in the morning only. Our daily consumption is between 150 -180 Amp Hrs. We have installed another battery charger (Magma) which is also an inverter 220V 50 cycle . We run both chargers and turn off the Magma after 10 minutes as the Dolphin is sufficient to top up the batteries. We leave approx. -34 Amp Hrs remaining to be topped up and the solar panels do this during the day. Our Magma inverter is handy as we can run the 220 V appliances without the generator. Using things like the washer or water maker can draw done the batteries quickly but if you use the inverter for .5 Hr the batteries are recharged by the solar panels. We have an Outback controller to monitor and put the correct charge in the batteries. WE have also switched all lights to LED. Paul LaFrance SV NOMAD #362 Currently in the BVI |

Hi Paul. We were moored next to you in Francis Bay a week or so ago on a charter boat and I meant to dink by and say hello, but you'd already gone the next morning. I wanted to ask you about the wind generator set up atop the mizzen. Do you get vibration transmitted through the mast and into the aft cabin?

We had twin Air-Xs on our previous boat mounted atop an arch that also carried solar panels. We got quite a bit of noise and vibration transmitted below, but it was OK as the main sleeping berth was forward. I'm planning on adding a Super Wind wind generator. I also liked your solar panel setup atop the davits. We have two 135 Watt Kyocera solar panels currently on the aft quarter rails of JAZZ, our Maramu 144. We're planning on adding davits this year and your mounting looks like a great idea. Any problems you've experienced? Yes we saw you come into Francis Bay When we mounted the wind generator on the mizzen we used a thick piece of rubber to dampen the vibration. We still can hear the wind generator when it is working in winds above 15 knots. It can be bothersome but it also alerts us to when we are experiencing high winds to check our position. Howard, we have a Super wind generator on top of the mizzen and never hear a thing. Paul, what brand do you have?, I wonder if it makes a difference. The superwind has blades that feather in strong winds so that peak revolutions are controlled and we have no concerns even in gales.

Thanks for your input. I've heard nothing but good things about the Super Wind unit, and that's the one we'll go with. The Air X generators we cruised with on our Caliber 40 (installed in '99) were screamers. We were on that tub of a Hunter 450CC, which my wife Lynda dubbed The Edsel (though she was comfortable enough). We cruised in the past down the entire eastern Caribbean and I have to say I still haven't found any place I like better than Francis Bay. I was saddened to learn that Maho Bay Camps is finally packing it in -- the land has been sold -- and I fear there won't be anywhere left there where one can get a cheap lunch and some cold beer. Sorry we missed you.
