We're so glad to see that Amel owners are really proud of their yachts and we're looking at them seriously for our family of four to go long term cruising. Can anyone do a "hard sell"on us as to why they're so great? We are of the mind that you're buying a top-notch system, among other things, when you go with Amel, and we like the idea that employees share the ups and downs of the company (ie great service). Apart from that we love how they look & the type sailing they seem to offer :-) So why Amel Super Maramu? This is the big plunge for us and there aren't many to view in Australia so we'd love your feedback. Here goes – Do you want to actually enjoy sailing? Do you want your family to enjoy sailing? Do you want a yacht that can take you around the world in comfort and ease? Do you want a yacht that enjoys a reputation that is top notch in the industry? Do you want a vessel that has been so well thought out that improvement is relatively unheard of? Amel is all this and more! To begin with, she is a forgiving vessel that you will enjoy sailing with electric winches and furling (read ‘no grunt work wrestling sails up and down), an incredibly comfortable center cockpit and a layout below decks that ensures comfort and safety as well as privacy amongst captain/crew with two cabins and two heads, situated at opposite ends of the vessel and has the added safety of water tight bulkheads (fore/aft and engine room). Couple this with the washer/dryer combo, dishwasher and unsurpassed storage, beautiful wood interior and appointments and your wife will be a happy camper! Stainless steel lifelines encircle the decks, a rarity amongst production sailing vessels, and the hard dodger will keep you warm/cool and dry (when coupled with the waterproof canopy). Amels are incredibly well balanced vessels, and when the sails are set correctly, one can sail the vessel with little to no steering corrections. Dual autopilots are great on passages (long or short) and deck storage is also great for all your lines/fenders/anchors/toys. In five years of sailing the Supermaramu Millenium 2000 with about 15K nautical miles, primarily just my husband and I (55 and 53 years old) we have never had any real problems with the vessel. The cockpit is dry, below decks is very dry and the ride is comfortable. Each person has their own set of wants/needs in a vessel, but if you were to purchase an Amel, I think you and your family would have made a great investment for the adventure of a lifetime! I'm sure you are by now well versed in Amels' monocoque construction, redundant safety and convenience systems, etc etc etc...what you probably haven't experienced is the comfortable and fast ride in most conditions. They are truly ocean boats but not so heavy that they slog along at intolerably slow speeds. Au contraire. They will speed along at 7+ kts in anything over 12 kts of wind. I have averaged at least 6 kts on all of my passages and have averaged close to 8 kts on a couple of passages when the wind was just right. When you are heeling close to 15 degrees its time to reef...that means pushing a few buttons, not climbing out on the deck to tie one in. You'll reef earlier and more often because its so easy. The cabin is dry and smells fresh even when the boat has been closed up for weeks. Find someone in Oz who will take you out for a sail...you will be hooked! What you have to say is great to hear, and I'll add that I am the wife :-) , and just being out there doing it in a fine yacht with my family will be fine with me. Our priorities are safety, ease of sailing when one of us is busy with the kids, and safety (robust, much storage etc). I never seem to read anything negative about these yachts and can't see why there are so few here in Oz. I imagine that some of it is that purists have stuff to say about the look of them, but we find them to be pleasing to the eye. We were nearly ready to buy a Little harbor 50, so it's like comparing apples with oranges, as far as we can see from here. We appreciate that priorities are different once you guys have actually been out there doing it, so it's hard to buy the right one when we are yet to set off. We really are happy with compromise on many levels though, so it widens our options somewhat. I like that you mention that she is well-balanced and sturdy. We are really struggling with the draft considering that we enjoy remote places on land so dont want to narrow our choices of anchorages (and take unnecessary risks, yep safety again) with deep draft. Are you happy with your yacht's draft considering you've been cruising for so long? One last question; we are not small people. 6'5"and 6" hence our kids are also tall. Is this going to be a problem re access to systems and getting around? I must say that I am looking forward to meeting at anchorage the generous and friendly people who have helped us make our choice. We've also heard that they are very dry, so thanks for your note on that. Aaah the smell of a musty yacht! Yes, speed is a big issue for us, for those days when you need it. Some makes we've loved have just been too sluggish when it counts. A kind owner has offered for us to join their passage in Oz which is so generous. Do a search of messages on this site for "dodger headroom". There are a few threads describing solutions to the low headroom in the cockpit. I'm 6'1" and have to stoop down when standing in he cockpit...even hunch over a bit when sitting at the helm. I haven't done it yet, and I've put 25000+ nm under the keel, but it is something I will do before I retire to live aboard full time.
There have been a few places I couldn't go due to the 6'9" draft, but wouldn't give up the way she sails to be able to go those few places. One of the things on my wish list was a swing keel. They aren't without problems, though, and I've never regretted my decision to buy an Amel.
