[Amel] Battery Plan for Amel 54

Duncan Hagemeyer

Hi Richard,

Mine is 009. And has a 12 battery/12V bank.

Do you have any suggestions regarding inverters, or smart control panels? I am learning from my cabin experience that there are many types.

I would like any input on a new battery plan for the A54 I have just started a solar program for a cabin and I have been advised that 6 volt 200 ah Trojans are the way to go for this off grid mountain cabin. The vendor is telling me these are low maintenance and will withstand even -30F temps. It would seem that this might be a good choice for the boat as well? I do not recall the size of the 12V batteries. I searched for a file or link to other posts that would also cover all aspects of the boats electrical system. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Trevor,

Hopefully NOT.I try to leave when it's -30! I can talk with you about a
mule, but 'ampage stick", not sure what that is.but it sounds like a
disease.

Hi Duncan,
Glad to see you getting good use from your boat, I have been following some
of your postings from time to time.
I dread to think where you might sail in -30F !. Seriously, 6 volt batteries
in a 54 are a no brainer you will never get the ampage stick with 12 volt
wet cell deep cycle that you can find easily enough in the Caribbean.
If you are talking to Tom please pass on our regards.
Fair winds,

Hi Richard,

Regarding your recommendation to buy Ideal clamps. The come in two grades of stainless; 410 and 300 both with 5/8” bands. Does it matter which grade?

I just spoke to a customer service rep at Ideal who says the 316 stainless is their most corrosion resistant product. Their 316 clamps have stainless band and screw...some have ferrous band and SS screw. She didn't know how long to expect them to last.
Expensive little buggers.

Hi Duncan. They were $2.59 to $2.99 apiece for the smaller ones and ~$6.75 for the bigger (3-5") ones. I'm not sure how many we'll need but I bought 20 ea of three smaller sizes (5/8-2 1/2") and 10 ea of two larger sizes (3-5"). I'm hoping to get to the boat this wkend and will report on what I used.

I do not recall the size of the 12V batteries. I searched for a file or link to other posts that would also cover all aspects of the boats electrical system. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Won't be sailing again this season. Giving my back a chance to heal, dealing with family illness, and working extra to try to get her paid for. Glad to hear you're getting to do what you enjoy. Dawn says Hi.

Regarding your recommendation to buy Ideal clamps. The come in two grades of stainless; 410 and 300 both with 5/8” bands. Does it matter which grade?

My regards to Dawn also. Is she still in the saddle? Tell her I bought a mule. He seems smarter on the trail than I. Sorry to learn you are not going sailing. I feel for you with back trouble. I had two episodes ’84 and ’94 that lasted almost a year. A physical therapist gave me an exercise….little girl push up/pelvis on the floor. It worked and I have not had any issues in 19 years…knock on wood. Keep the dream, you will sail again.

Hi Duncan,
She's at St Simons Island Morningstar Marina at Brunswick, GA. It's the farthest West place on the Eastern Seabord and hasn't had a class 3 hurricane since 1861. It's an easy in and out from there to visit Savannah & Charleston to the North and St Marys, Jacksonville, and St Augustine to the South. 6-8 ft tides there as the tide funnels in from the N & S, so you have to pay attention or you'll be bucking a 2-4 kt current. Marina is very nice w all the amenities and lots of good restaurants close by. There's another municipal marina in Brunswick and a place that can haul you out nearby. Savannah's an hour by car but an overnite sail as its quite a way upriver from the coast. Lots of places to duck in and drop anchor close by. All in all I think I'd prefer the Chesapeake for its quaint towns and boating history, but that's quite a way farther N and the bay is full of jellyfish all summer. It should be easy to go to the Bahamas from Brunswick, too.

Steady as she goes.

Regarding your recommendation to buy Ideal clamps. The come in two grades of stainless; 410 and 300 both with 5/8” bands. Does it matter which grade?

Kent, I contacted Ideal directly at their Tennessee distribution center. I am waiting to see if they will sell them to me as a distributor. How’s the practice going? Going to see you down island this year?

Defender has AWAB 316 SS clamps at a better price than I could find Ideal. Still pricey but peace of mind.

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the information on Morningstar marina. I am pretty familiar with the region, and used to do a lot of business with CSX in Jacksonville. If I were still a golfer…not doubt a great spot.

I suppose the lure of the Caribbean is the terrific natural beauty of the water and just sailing along past the islands. No matter what one hears, one can find friendly, helpful people one every island. I sailed from Antigua to Grenada and realized that the old Caribbean of the 80’s does not exist (ex. Dominica), but the other side of the reality is one can pick up a hook in dozens of spots and have connection to the world and still find the flavor of island life. We never had any issues with ‘pesky’ boat boys that gave the island a bad name. In fact, from Dominica down to Grenada we found that they were polite, much more organized, and OLDER. The seemed to have gotten the idea that if they are not needed they wave and move on. In St. Lucia they have a loose organization (forget the name) and can help arrange tours, watch your boat and go to airports and pick up crew.

If you and any other Amel owners would like to talk about finding a winter home I am offering to start a discussion. I spoke with Richard Piller yesterday regarding Secret Harbor Marina in Grenada. It is owned by a very wealthy Frenchman who owns and has all his interest in Calivigny Island off S. Grenada. I am told that he uses the marina as a staging spot for employee changes and cargo going to and from the island. The marina is virtually empty. I am one of less than 10 boats out of 40-50 slips. I lies in the back of Mt. Hartman Bay…guarded by huge reefs and a small channel to the south. It has a 300 foot hill to the west and another peninsula to the East that holds Fat Hog Bay. It has a rally nice architecturally designed restaurant that typically had about 10 customers. Excellent WIFI. And the surrounding hills are either natural or hold some of the nicest homes in Grenada. Just bit prettier spot than you would imagine. 10 minutes to the airport with non-stop service from Miami. Also all the marine services are in the S/SW of the island. Also, below the hurricane zone.

To the point, it might make a real good spot for a group of Amel owners to approach the management about a long term lease. Or for some enterprising young guy to organize an English speaking base in the region.

I will report more when I get back to the island in December.

Duncan

Hi Duncan,
She's at St Simons Island Morningstar Marina at Brunswick, GA.

Hi Kent,

Where is Kristy moored?

I would love to find a real good sailing region here in the US. It’s a LONG way to Grenada from Bozeman. That said, I am really happy with Mt. Hartman Bay and I will report on the service at Secret Harbor in December.
