[Amel] 220 Volt engine room fan not working - FIXED

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Update on the 220 Volt engine room ventilation fan.

I just did a 3 hours genset test run (charge batteries, etc.)

With the new Capacitor, the 220 Volt exhaust fan works very well!
You can definitely feel the air going out of the exhaust on the port side of the boat.

Posted new pictures on:
http://nikimat.com/engine_room_fans.html

My next tests (which I should have tested when I went sailing Saturday):
Are the two 24 Volt fans (1 for intake and for exhaust) working???

For some reason, they are different...

The intake is a Jabsco 35440-0010 250 CFM Blower
The Exhaust is a FASCO 24 Volt 2807-513-122 --- 93004-2815

Also, even thought they are "24 VOLT", they work on "12 VOLT".
Here is what the Owner Manual says (page 114 or Section 2.4.13

Evacuation for the engine works as soon as the voltage is applied to the engine.
It operated at the same time the fresh air suction.

These both 24 Volt devices work intentionally on 12 Volt delivered by the engine alternator, and can be switch off using 2 circuit breakers right to ghe main engine exhaust urbine.

I just uploaded 3 pictures of the fan
in the engine room.

I don't know if all Super Maramu are the same, but for sure
NIKIMAT SM2K #289  has a 220 Volt, followed by a 24
Volt (not 12 volt).
The 24 Volt is a FASCO (I know Eric, so closed to
JABSCO).
As far as I know, the 220 Volt is connected to the Genset
and the 24 volt to the Engine.
My 220 Volt is working.
As I previously wrote, haven't check the 24 volt.

Hope this helps, sincerely, Alexandre

Good morning Eric,

I run out of time and did not check if the second fan
(which
I think is a 24

Volt and not a 12 Volt) is working when I run the engine.

I will do that later on this week.

I found a little fuse that was defective!!!

So now the 220 Volt fan is working!

Next week will try again genset to see if with this fan

Hi,

The 220 volt fan is on top of the 12 volt exhaust fan on

Kimberlite.

Kind of strange setup but it works.

When the genset is on the 220 volt fan blows the exhaust

through the 12 volt

fan.

When the engine is on the 12 volt fan sucks the air

through

the 220 volt

fan.

I believe there is a solenoid that operates the 220 volt

exhaust fan. You

might check that.

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put

from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

You might check the continuity of wires or possibly there

a fuse.

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put

from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

I don't fully understand the two-charger scenario, Bill, but when I replaced both the old chargers (one failed in Trinidad, the other when I got back to the US) I was told that I could run both simultaneously to more rapidly charge the bank with the generator in bulk charging mode.  And in fact it does charge at ~85A when using both the 60A and 30A chargers on a battery bank that is about 35% depleted.  When the batteries are more fully charged, the amperage drops appropriately.  After the Amperage drops below 60, I turn the 30 amp charger off and just use the 60A one.  The 60A charger is a Sterling smart charger, and the 30 A is a Charles.

If anyone knows why they don't sense each other's charge and limit the output, I'd like to hear the explanation (in layman's terms, please :)

Alex,

I am not sure how your house batteries are setup and your chargers, but I cannot imagine any setup that would allow for two battery chargers to be used with one bank of batteries. I think that the batteries will never get fully charged because one charger would sense the charging of the other charger and go to float. The same with the other charger.

Anyway, just my comment on your statement about running 2 chargers.

I am glad you found the fuse on the 220v fan. I have my doubts about the output of our 220v fan...it seems to be weak.

I am not that fluent on your engine, but just pulled the injectors, exhaust elbow and turbo on the 100hp Yanmar. I was experiencing lower RPM. I found a dirty turbo that needed serious cleaning and I suspected fouled injectors, but found that the nozzles needed replacing. I also found leaks in the weld joints of the Yanmar elbow which we replaced about 1,200 hours ago. I had a 316 polished stainless elbow fabricated at Emek Marine in Turkey for half the Yanmar price in Turkey. With a cleaned turbo, new nozzles and a new elbow, we are back in high RPM territory.

Best,

Bill

You might check the continuity of wires or possibly there is

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put
from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

Good morning Bill,

Always nice to hear from you.

About the battery chargers, on the owner manual, section 2.1 it says (in a red box):

-At the Harbour: 30 A charger
-In the open sea: 50 A charger + 30 A charger (1 min after)

Even though I was tied at the dock, I simulated to be at sea (shore power disconnected), had batteries down to 70%, so I run the genset to charge them, plus use Air COnditionning, do some work, try the microwave (works), try the dishwasher (does not work well - forum question for later).

Since at the dock (under shore power), I only use the 30 Amp charger, I was happy to see the 50 A charger showing a "net" 39 amp charge, then when I added the 30 A, saw a 69 Amp "net" charge.

2 hours later, once the batteries were charged at 90% and the charge was only 20 or so Amp, I switch off the small charger.

After 3 hours, I was happy with the test, switch off genset and went back to shore power.

Regarding the 220 Volt fan, I totally agree, very weak fan...

I am envious of your higher rpm!!!
I really thought cleaning the turbo the way I did was good enough:
http://nikimat.com/volvo_tmd22_turbo.html

What is the "nozzles"?

Always nice to hear from you! Hello to Judy! Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put

from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.
