Volvo Penta TMD22 Low RPM

Miles Bidwell <mbidwell@...>

Thanks to everyone for your concern and advice. Yesterday the mechanic
replaced the racor and the fuel lines and this fixed the problem. I have my
boat back after several months of anguish. Now the problem is to find out
why fuel lines the are sitting under 160 gallons of fuel should have
negative pressure-maybe a clog in the bottom of the fuel tank or the copper
line to the racor? This is not difficult to find and fix and in the
meantime the boat runs up smoothly to 2800 all the time.

Hi Miles:

While this may be too obvious to even mention, I thought I would pass it along. At one time I could not develop full power from my 75 hp Yanmar, I found that the fuel shut off valve int he quarter-berth companionway have been accidentally partially closed, causing a partial fuel starvation situation. Just eyeballing it didn't seem to show it closed but as I pulled (or pushed, I forget which action) on the handle the valve opened and the engine fully regained power.

Glad to hear you are getting a handle on your problem.

Hello all,

I turns out that my problems are caused by an air leak. Today, the mechanic
ran the boat with the fuel lines directly into a can of fuel and it went
straight up to 2900 and then dropped back to 2800, as it had done in 1998
when it was new. A few weeks ago, I heard about someone who bought a used
Amel and could not get over 5 knots. His hull was clean but a marine garden
was growing under his wing. He cleaned it a fixed the problem. I
understand that anything is possible, but if Amel did put the wrong prop on
a boat, it is hard to imagine that they, or the owner going through the Amel
week long boot camp, would not have noticed. Amel runs these boats before
delivery so that things like the first oil change, etc., have all been done
before the owner gets the boat.

If any boat with the TMD22 will not get to 2800, something is wrong.

Good luck to all. Now, all I have to do is to find the source of the air
leak.

Miles,

Can you explain the procedure the mechanic used to determine this please.
Did he bypass the fuel tank?

If so, at what point? I am curious for future reference. Thanks.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi all,

My motor tmd 22 smoke very black after 2400RPM.
I think i have a problem with wastegate of the turbo. I think the wastegate is locked in position Open.
Is it easy to clean this gate ?
Thank for your help.

Hello all,

I think that you will find that the boat is not "over propped as it came
from Amel. Someone who says it is does not understand the boat.

I bought my Super Maramu new in 1998 and Amel explained that the engine and
prop were set to give the boat a maximum RPM of 2800 and push the boat at
hull speed which is about 8 knots depending on sea conditions. The idea of
governing the engine to less than its maximum rpms is to move down the
torque curve and take advantage of the auto-prop self adjusting ability and
increase mileage and reduce noise. I am now having mysterious problems with
the engine which may be related to the high pressure fuel pump. If the
motor is running as it should (a big if), and the prop is clean with smooth
bearings, it should run up to 2800 if the boat bottom is very clean.
Beware of shops that tell you otherwise and then charge you for unnecessary
work.

Hi Alexandre. I really do not have the specifics on what the original pitch and diameter was and now is.
Geoff did consult with Brunton's in the UK and between them both figured out a profile that would give somewhere between 200 and 400 additional RPM's based upon the performance data I supplied.
I am not sure where you are but if able you should call Geoff on 401.847.7960
He is extremely helpful and knowledgable.
I wish I could give more help other than the common theme that many SM with 78HP TMD22's seem to be over propped.

Terry.

Is there any way, you would share the info on the H6 auto prop?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Success!

To close this thread out.

Greg Prior and David Sheppard (AB Marine and Bruntons
respectively) re-worked our A6 prop based upon the extensive
imperial data we provided.

The prop was installed last week and Libby was off on a 5
day excursion to Catalina Island. Here is my email to Geoff
Prior.

'Good morning Geoff, I wanted to close the loop with you
on the prop work.

The prop was installed last week by Rick our local diver.

I took Libby on a 5 day excursion to Catalina Island which
turned out to be a 179 mile round trip with no wind!
(motoring there and back)

I am pleased to report that I was easily able to exceed 2000
RPM at cruising speed.

Noted speeds were 7.6 knots at 2500 RPM and WOT 3100 RPM at
9+ knots.

I know this took a little work on everyones part, and I
would like to thank both you for your excellent support and
help.
