[Amel Yacht Owners] Skype
Hi Eric,
I see that Bill has already picked up on this and is more likely better informed than me.Any information that I have comes directly from the Inmarsat website that statesImarsat B with voice distress which was due to close December 2014 has now been extended to December 2016. I think that may be Mini M but I'm not sure.I am please to see with Fleet that they are now actively promoting the use of the emergency 505 number which has been around for a while but many people were unaware of it. You have a redirected connection to Holland,USA or Australia in emergencies.Best regards,Trevor
Trevor,
iPod Touch? Like an iPhone without the phone part? A regular iPod will not connect to the internet.
Best regards,

Hi Mark,
I understand how easy it is to confuse the two, but I mean iPod
I first did this in Brazil a few years ago before iPads were heard of.

Interesting, Trevor. I didn't know you could connect directly to the internet with an iPOD...guess it's another technology that has made my 5 y/o iPOD obsolete. Great idea!

Another tried and tested method of cheap communication
is when you open a Skype account,if you have an iPod get a pair of earphones with a mike as per an apple phone, download Skype to the iPod and when you go ashore and hook up to a wifi connection you will get around 45 minutes good quality phone connection.
The iPod in a little water proof bag has the advantages of less likely to attract attention from thieves, easier to carry and I found it to have better sound quality than my PC.
