Good news on the Inmarsat December 2016. We plan to cross the Atlantic end of 2015 beginning of 2016, so my problem is solved...thanks Alex.

Hi Eric,

I see that Bill has already picked up on this and is more likely better informed than me.
Any information that I have comes directly from the Inmarsat website that states
Imarsat B with voice distress which was due to close December 2014 has now been extended to December 2016. I think that may be Mini M but I'm not sure.
I am please to see with Fleet that they are now actively promoting the use of the emergency 505 number which has been around for a while but many people were unaware of  it. You have a redirected connection to Holland,USA or Australia in emergencies.
Best regards,
Trevor

Trevor,

Doesn't the Fleet Broadband use the Inmarsat constellation. I heard that my mini -m sat phone will be discontinued next year and the constellation

which also uses Inmarsat..

Did I hear incorrectly.

Fair winds,

Eric

Exactly that Mark. Looks like an original I phone, fits in your shirt or pants pocket, saves lugging a laptop around and if you lose it, it isn't the end of the world.
I found it to have much better sound quality for Skype calls than my PC.
Sorry for the lack of technical info. but I struggle with all types of IT.
Life on board took a massive upturn when I started using a Macbook with MacEnc navigational software.
Passage weather and ZY Grib weather files all overlay on Navionics charts and the Mac connected very easily to the Fleet Broadband and has been much easier and cleaner to connect up and use without erroneous downloads.

Trevor,

iPod Touch? Like an iPhone without the phone part? A regular iPod will not connect to the internet.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I understand how easy it is to confuse the two, but I mean iPod

I first did this in Brazil a few years ago before iPads were heard of.

Hi Kent,
The iPod that I use for this is at least four years old. I am hopeless with this IT stuff so I walked into an Apple store and asked if this idea would work.
They said they had no idea but tried it out for me in the store so I bought the lead for an iPhone with the mike and it has been really useful ever since.
What hasn't been said in the recent postings about SSB and sat phones is that mid ocean you will get a direct connection with emergency services on a sat phone.
I am a big SSB fan but unfortunately nowadays it is not as well monitored for emergencies and we are very dependent on the international volunteers who stand watch on the emergency channel and the atmospheric conditions.
Regards,
Trevor

Interesting, Trevor. I didn't know you could connect directly to the internet with an iPOD...guess it's another technology that has made my 5 y/o iPOD obsolete. Great idea!

Another tried and tested method of cheap communication

is when you open a Skype account,if you have an iPod get a pair of earphones with a mike as per an apple phone, download Skype to the iPod and when you go ashore and hook up to a wifi connection you will get around 45 minutes good quality phone connection.

The iPod in a little water proof bag has the advantages of less likely to attract attention from thieves, easier to carry and I found it to have better sound quality than my PC.
