[Amel Yacht Owners] finally bought an Amel

Kent Robertson

Welcome to the family, Aras.  I know you'll be happy with your Amel, and you've found the right place to come for help as a new (or veteran) owner.  I am a SM owner, so won't be able to help you much with your Sharki, but I'm sure you'll have several folks with the answers you need.

I am currently in Fernandina Beach, FL, but after getting some problems taken care of I will be sailing in the Bahamas and FL during the month of May as well (I hope).  My home port is currently in Brunswick, GA, which is the farthest West place on the US East coast.  They haven't had a class 3 hurricane there for over 100years and it's easy access from the marina to the ocean.  If you're coming by there and want to spend a night or two there, let me know and we'll come down from N. Carolina for a visit.  St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach, Savannah (a bit farther from the coast), and Charleston are great places to visit on your way North if you have time.  Beaufort, NC is quite a bit inland, but has enough water to get our boats in (how much water does a Sharki draw?)  North of Beaufort there's not enough water to get into most places with our SM 6'9" draft until you get to the Chesapeake.

Again, welcome to the Amel family.  We all look forward to hearing from you and meeting you for a glass of wine or rhum or beer some time.
Kent

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] finally bought an Amel

After some months of searching, I finally was able to buy an 1988 Amel Sharki (#163).  Joel, if you are out there reading this; THANK YOU  again for all your help.  Joel did me a great service in helping me narrow down my choices.
To the previous owners, I'd also like to thank them for taking such meticulous care of the boat. I look forward to working with them on my transition.
As usual with any new boat, comes a learning curve.  The survey pointed out a few things and those were addressed.  I'll be going back down to Florida to sail her back to Annapolis towards the end of May.  In the meantime I do have a couple of questions:
1) Can some one tell the make of the Stern light and the bulb it requires?
2) The galley reefer might need to be replaced.  Like to find a replacement.
3) The boat is pretty much stock, so I'm looking for a source for European style plugs (bith 12V and 220V) that I can adapt for my electronics.
4) And lastly, I might new to replace the fresh water pump. A location of where the pump is and pump brand/ number would be helpful.

Thanks Kristy.
The draws 6'6" measured.  Book says it only draws 6'   I just got the call that the water pump is indeed nearly dead.  To the best of my knowledge the Sharki shares many of the same components as the Maramu's.  So if by chance you know about the fresh water pump I'm all ears.

My plan is to sail the outside up to the Chesapeake bay to Annapolis.  Shouldn't take more than a week and I have the GS going for me. I'll spend this next year up there as I wrap up some things then go elsewhere.

Look at Dennis' solution to the fresh water pump problems he had (Post #14750).  My SM  (#243-1999) also has the same A.M.F.A. pump as he replaced.  Others have put on-demand pumps in as replacements and seem to be happy with them.  So far my AMFA pump is 10+ years old and with regular maintenance and occasional tweaking of the air pressure and/or on/off pressure settings it has performed well.

Thanks Kent. I also called Amel to see if they have parts /or a alternate fix for it.
My guess is that the pump is no longer available and I will need a replacement.  Since the boat is in FLA and I'm in Wash DC, my repair guy will do the work before I shove off to pick up the boat for the trip North to Annapolis.

I agree...the Reya B66 also referred to as the A.M.F.A. pump is a great pump. BeBe was delivered in Jan 2003. The pump is 11 years old and we have been on BeBe an average of 11 months/year.

I was going to install the pump kit that I received from Amel years ago, but had Emek in Gocek, Turkey do the job. BTW, the carbon brushes were almost totally gone, and the nylon on the mechanical seal was worn almost to the metal. The metal impeller was missing a few blades. The B66 kit does not include the sealed bearings...I had Emek source those.

Take a look:

So, Kent, it may be time for a rebuild.

Thanks Bill.  Although Kristy (and the pump) are 15 yrs old, she has only been lived aboard for a total of something like 4 years.  I'm hoping to retire in another 6-9 months and will have a look before we set sail.  The previous owner supplied a complete new pump so I haven't been too worried about it as long as it's working so well.
