Why don’t you just order a new gypsy from Imtra that will fit whatever chain you want.

Curious...My gypsy isn't marked.  My old chain isn't marked.

I got samples:

3/8"BBB which are 27mm inside length...it's too short to work on the gypsy I have.

3/8" G4 HT which are 31mm inside length...it seems to fit OK.

The old chain is 30mm inside length, 10mm dia...so over a 12 link length it's 12mm shorter than the HT.

Does anyone know what my old chain is? (10mm dis, 30mm inside length)  If it's G3, of good quality, and available in the US, that's what I'd like to buy, as it's probably significantly cheaper than the HT.  I guess it may be some cheaper Chinese stuff which might explain the severe rust problem.  I don't know what to call it, so I don't know what to search for.

Thanks,

Kent

I'm told that would cost $300-400. Would rather avoid that extra cost.

I see the 3/8 gypsy at budget marine for 230 less boat owners discount if  you have one. Do check the key on the gypsy, mine was quite bent last time I had it off.

Eric,

On BeBe the key is on the inner clutch cone, not on the gypsy. And, yes this key takes a beating if you do not keep the clutch cone greased. I grease the cone each year.

The first time I serviced my windlass, I had a helluva time getting the gypsy off, found the keyway and key were damaged.  I had them cut a new keyway which still looks good now.  Good reason to always use a chain snubber, eh?
Although it's not marked, my gypsy fits the 3/8" G4 HT chain, but not the BBB chain, so I'm going to replace the old ISO G 30 BBB chain with 3/8" ISO G4HT.  Seems all the BBB chain I can find on line is DIN, and all the HT I can find is ISO.  Thanks again, Bill.

I bet Amel owners are going to be teaching a lot of other sailors about chains now (-:
