[Amel Yacht Owners] Hit by another boat...

john martin <symoondog@...>

The same thing happened to us in Panama. We were on a mooring at the yacht club next to the channel going into the locks. We were down below and I thought a ship had hit us. Turns out, a big ketch got caught in the 3 knot current and smashed into us. It also bent the furler around as its attached to the pulpit by the 2 lines. The entire pulpit had to be replaced. There was no other damage but it sure looked bad. It wasn't easy getting a new pulpit built and we were lucky that the fellow that hit us told the welding shop to just get it done and he would pay for it. All new wiring and lights. They couldn't match the Amel metric tubing so we went with the next size. I agree with Joel. Get a good surveyor if possible. If not, I think you will be alright. Like the old watch add used to say, Amels take a licking, and keep on ticking...John ex SM 248

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hit by another boat...

Dear Amel Owners,

This morning 9.30 was hit by another boat:
Felt like a pretty violent impact.
Bow Pulpit bent
Port navigation light (possibly electric wire cut in the stanchion or just broken bulb)
My main concern is possible damages to the connection of the forestay and electric unfurling/furling motor (which was bent 40 degree).

I posted some pictures on:
http://nikimat.com/accident.html

Owner was very sorry and came back to apologize, very nice person.

First time for me to have a boating accident.
Have no idea how to handle this, what to look for.
Would hate to miss a damage then later have problems.
So any advice is welcome!

This is actually the 3rd time in 5 week that a boat hit me at this marina.

On the bright side, yesterday installed new Dolphin 40 Amp Battery Charger and new Engine room Blower, both work perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your help...

Sincerely Alexandre

Dear John,

Thanks for your email and remaining active on the forum! I really appreciate the time you took to reply.
I also think it needs to be replaced.
The owner also said he would pay for it directly.
Will keep in mind going a size larger if metric not available in Nassau.

Talked to my insurance (DeLassee) here is the answer:
they first need information on the 3rd party.
Then an estimate from a reputable repair shop.
then they will decide whether or not to send an expert.
Then, should the 3rd party decide to pay directly for the damages instead of using their insurance, the claim will be closed.

I ask Amel for a reputable repair shop in nassau, no reply yet.

Thanks again for your help!!!
Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre:

Last year we had similar looking damage - ended up being ~$30,000 total...the really big work (cost) was the glass fibre work up front.

You have to find a good repair shop and get a total estimate. Call with any questions,

Owner was very sorry and came back to apologize, very nice person.

First time for me to have a boating accident.
Have no idea how to handle this, what to look for.
Would hate to miss a damage then later have problems.
So any advice is welcome!

This is actually the 3rd time in 5 week that a boat hit me at this marina.

On the bright side, yesterday installed new Dolphin 40 Amp Battery Charger and new Engine room Blower, both work perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your help...

Hello Alexandre,

I am in Majorca, the boat is in South of France and I am taking her to Emek Marine in early Aug for a serious refit before a RTW trip.

GL with your headache.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hit by another
boat...

Dear Amel Owners,

This morning 9.30 was hit by another boat:

Felt like a pretty violent impact.

Bow Pulpit bent

Port navigation light (possibly electric wire cut in the
stanchion or just broken bulb)

My main concern is possible damages to the connection of the
forestay and electric unfurling/furling motor (which was
bent 40 degree).

I posted some pictures on:

http://nikimat.com/accident.html

Owner was very sorry and came back to apologize, very nice
person.

First time for me to have a boating accident.

Have no idea how to handle this, what to look for.

Would hate to miss a damage then later have problems.

So any advice is welcome!

This is actually the 3rd time in 5 week that a boat hit me
at this marina.

On the bright side, yesterday installed new Dolphin 40 Amp
Battery Charger and new Engine room Blower, both work
perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your help...

Sincerely Alexandre

Alexandre,

I am so sorry to see the damage you have incurred. I can only hope that the culprit is well insured and that there are the facilities to get Nikimat repaired properly. I would be inclined to contact Amel and ask their opinion as to what might be serious. A good stainless man could rebuild your pulpit and you won't see the join.

It is my experience that yachts suffer damage mostly at the hands of others in marinas. That's why I prefer to hang on the anchor away from the incompetent. It's usually cooler too!

Good luck with the repairs.

Thanks Jean-Pierre, (where are you located?)

I talked to the insurance (DeLassee) this morning they emailed me the claim form (English version), but today the owner was out (with his boat, still not back).
I have the name/phone number of the 2 witness (marina employees).
I called his captain in Fort Lauderdale and explained my insurance needs his name, etc. then after the estimation of the cost he will have the option to pay it without going as a claim, he replied: "since I contacted to my insurance he has nothing to tell me".
I am not going to make any judgment at this time, as the owner (person who hit my boat) was very nice.

Thanks everybody for your help and sharing past experience.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Dear Ian,

Thanks for your kind message so welcome in this frustrating time.

Expert from the other insurance came this morning and refused to look at my boat before he look at the other one, which he was surprised had left (yesterday morning) when I asked questions he refused to answer because of conflict of interest, he said his job is to defent the other boat.

Stainless steel employe came and said he thinks there is too much damage to repair the pulpit, that he prefer his boss come in person, he was also surprised to hear the other boat left and said I should call the Defence Force.
After seeing the shop yesterday I feel prety confident they will do a good job.

Happend to meet the marina manager who did not know about the accident, he was prety upset that none of the employees told him and said it is a violation of maritime law the for other boat to leave, to get him on the phone, etc. Finally I felt someone was finally caring about my problem... while everybody else is just saying not to worry, things will be ok, blablabla and actually were upset I talked to my insurance.

I emailed both Amel Martinique and La Rochelle. In Martinique Jean Colin said he doubt the pulpit is reparaible and is waiting for the price from La Rochelle. Have not heard back from Amel France...

Thanks for sharing your experience on Marinas, because I have to work during the week it is so much more convenient to be connected to shore power and internet, plus I like to walk in town after work, etc.

Thanks again everyone for your support.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Alexandre,

I am so sorry to see the damage you have incurred. I can
only hope
that the culprit is well insured and that there are the
facilities
to get Nikimat repaired properly. I would be inclined to
contact
Amel and ask their opinion as to what might be serious.
A good
stainless man could rebuild your pulpit and you
won't see the join.

It is my experience that yachts suffer damage mostly at
the hands of
others in marinas. That's why I prefer to hang on
the anchor away
from the incompetent. It's usually cooler too!

Good luck with the repairs.

Thanks Jean-Pierre, (where are

I talked to the insurance
(DeLassee) this
morning they emailed me the claim
form
(English version), but today the
owner was out
(with his boat, still not back).

I have the name/phone number of
the 2 witness
(marina employees).

I called his captain in Fort
Lauderdale and
explained my insurance needs his
name, etc.
then after the estimation of the
cost he will
have the option to pay it without
going as a
claim, he replied: "since I
contacted to my
insurance he has nothing to tell
me".

I am not going to make any
judgment at this
time, as the owner (person who hit
my boat)
was very nice.

Thanks everybody for your help and
sharing
past experience.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hit
by another

boat...

Dear Amel Owners,

This morning 9.30 was hit by
another boat:

Felt like a pretty violent impact.

Bow Pulpit bent

Port navigation light (possibly
electric wire
cut in the

stanchion or just broken bulb)

My main concern is possible
damages to the
connection of the

forestay and electric
unfurling/furling motor
(which was

bent 40 degree).

I posted some pictures on:

http://nikimat.com/accident.html

Owner was very sorry and came back
to
apologize, very nice

person.

First time for me to have a
boating accident.

Have no idea how to handle this,
what to look
for.

Would hate to miss a damage then
later have
problems.

So any advice is welcome!

This is actually the 3rd time in 5
week that a
boat hit me

at this marina.

On the bright side, yesterday
installed new
Dolphin 40 Amp

Battery Charger and new Engine
room Blower,
both work

perfectly!

Thanks in advance for your help...

Sincerely Alexandre
