[Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa size

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi Pat, yes we remember you well. That is one of the sad things about going as far as we have, we leave good friends behind. Plus side, we meet so many more. We sail off shore with the genoa and roll it as necessary. If you get a new one made tell the sail maker that it needs to be built to take strong winds furled to suit. If not they may build you a 15 knot sail which would be completely inadequate. We have a 90% heavy weather jib we put on in advance of serious weather or if we anticipate a lot of work to windward. (this can be furled smaller if necessary) A partially furled sail will never be as good to windward as a sail the right size. HOWEVER, we cruising couples do not have foredeck gorillas to change sails for us so we have to compromise so rolling up part of the genoa is a good option. If a storm is coming then the smaller sail should be on. You need both.
On the voyage to New Caledonia this month we started in a NW 30 to 35 knots and we were hard on the wind with the big genoa furled half or less and half the main. The wind swung on the second day to SW and we were broad reaching  with 3 full sails. On the voyage, as the wind changed we used all the sails at different times. Twin headsails flat off, then reaching with 4 sails, genoa, mizzen staysail, main and mizzen.
Good to hear from you.
Kind regards
Danny

Danny, Thanks for the info. We see you guys are now in New Caledonia , its great you two are using your boat as intended so much. Since we meet several years ago , we are just now finally leaving for the winter heading for the Caribbean. Diane retires in two weeks. Do you sail offshore with your full size genoa or something smaller? Do you have a storm jib? Bill from BEBE sails with just a genoa , in fact sold a ATN he had. Thanks , Pat

Hi Pat,
The Amel spec in the brochure for the Super maramu has the following sail areas. Genoa 71 sq m, main 35 sq m, mizzen 19 sq m, Mizzen ballooner 35 sq m, Ballooner 68 sq m. The ballooner and the Genoa/jib have the same foot length but the ballooner has a different (higher) cut clew to tack, hence the slightly smaller area. The purpose is that they are balanced for the down wind twin pole system. If one is larger than the other you are unbalanced. Many sail makers have the standard sail plan available to work from.
The genoa does roll successfully for use in stronger winds. (with accordingly forward movement of the jib car)
Regards
Danny

That's my understanding, Pat. The original sails were shot and discarded when I bought the boat, so I never saw them.  I also have a 110 with a high cut clew that is great for anything 15-25kts that I use most of the time in the Carib winter.  The 145 would be significantly better for anything less than 10kts and I think would be fine for up to ~18 with a few feet furled up and/or sailing jib and jigger.
I would get the 145 and a smaller sail for heavier winds.

Can you confirm that the boat came with a 145 standard ? Thanks , Pat
