Hi Pat, yes we remember you well. That is one of the sad things about going as far as we have, we leave good friends behind. Plus side, we meet so many more. We sail off shore with the genoa and roll it as necessary. If you get a new one made tell the sail maker that it needs to be built to take strong winds furled to suit. If not they may build you a 15 knot sail which would be completely inadequate. We have a 90% heavy weather jib we put on in advance of serious weather or if we anticipate a lot of work to windward. (this can be furled smaller if necessary) A partially furled sail will never be as good to windward as a sail the right size. HOWEVER, we cruising couples do not have foredeck gorillas to change sails for us so we have to compromise so rolling up part of the genoa is a good option. If a storm is
coming then the smaller sail should be on. You need both. On the voyage to New Caledonia this month we started in a NW 30 to 35 knots and we were hard on the wind with the big genoa furled half or less and half the main. The wind swung on the second day to SW and we were broad reaching with 3 full sails. On the voyage, as the wind changed we used all the sails at different times. I have been using only either my 110 heavy genoa or the factory supplied larger genoa offshore for the last 12 years. The 110 seems to be sufficient for all weather conditions. Kent, I was thinking about going with a 135, thinking it would be better for heavier conditions in the Caribbean. But I think I will go with a 145, if that is what is the original size. My sailmaker points out that a 145 on our boat would not be nearly the same sq. footage as a 145 on a 53 ft. sloop , thus when reefed in should be able to handle pretty strong conditions , especially if off the wind. Can you confirm that the boat came with a 145 standard ? Thanks , Pat
