I am not so sure that the Amel covers are that tight. I use the large (12mm) ones on all the main mast lowers which provide a fairly loose fit. What size tubing are you using? Ian SM414 (2003) Crusader Cyprus On 29/12/2014 19:38,

I have not seen the Amel covers but I had impression they were somewhat tight fitting. The PVC pipe I used was quite a bit larger than the wire so as not to trap anything. Nathan Bossett who is on this list and now owns my former boat could say exactly but I think perhaps the inner diameter of the PVC is 20 or 22mm. It was open on the bottom so water could run freely. ---In amelyachtowners@..., <sv_freespirit@...> wrote :

Hi did you use rigid PVC. If so did you split the PVC or did you just cut a slit in it? Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite SM 376

The covers on my shrouds were tight, and worn out. I replaced them with sizes to match the shroud diameters, but particularly the forward lowers are now wearing where the sheets are in contact with them, I think it would be better to have larger diameters covers that could roll with the sheets.
My previous boat had PVC electrical conduit about twice the diameter of the shrouds and that worked well, until the UV broke them down, but of course you have to dismantle the rigging to get them on. I may do that for the fwd lowers. Cheers Alan SV Elyse SM437

Yes it was rigid PVC, possibly the thicker walled stuff. I just slit it with a saw and closed it with zip ties covered by rigging tape. Last time I saw the boat, which was about 5 years from when I did it, it all looked intact. And of course it's cheap to renew any or all of those items.
