Hi Bill

We are quite interested in changing our cushions sometime soon I would be very interested in what you have opted for both in terms of materials and who you are getting to make them for you and ultimately your opinion of the final result.

All the best.

We are in Barcelona and replacing all of the salon interior cushions. So, in about two weeks we will have the original cushions for anyone who may want them. They are in reasonable condition with no tears or holes. They need cleaning. They are made of UltraSuede and is a beige or light tan color. If you want these and are in the area, they are yours.

Andrew,

I had a career in furniture manufacturing. I know a little more about the process than most. The most important factors are design, fabric, cushion core construction, and sewing techniques.

I interviewed several candidates for the job and settled on what I think is a very good one.

We changed the look and design of the cushions to be more up-to-date by removing the channels sewn into the cushion covers, raised the height of the back slightly, and changed the back design to be more comfortable. We kept the general design of the bullnose seat cushions but removed the channels. We made some other minor changes to the cushion dimensions and probably not noticeable to anyone but me. One added feature ias that all of the seating surfaces of the cushions have a 25mm layer of Viscoelastic foam (memory foam) glued to the top of HR 3.5 (High Resilience Foam). This will make the buttery feel of UltraLeather even more buttery.

We chose UltraLeather in an Ivory color. There are hundreds of knock-offs of UltraLeather... We are using the original which is made in Japan.

We are using double-needle stitching for many off the seams and French stitching for the remainder.

Tomorrow I will see the new foam cores as they are being brought to the boat for a fitting.

This same project cost a good friend about 7,000 euros in Hyeres, France. That job was well done and I posted some photos on the Amel Owner's Group website. It will be less here in Barcelona. I am very sure that we will get the same quality.

Hi All!

If I can convince Il Capitano the "value" of changing the cushions, I too, would like to do the same.  We have used UltraLeather in our last 3 boats, and love Inboth our Nauticat 43 and Nordhaven 47,  we used it throughout, even as a cover for bed in master cabin, so that even when it was not made up, it looked good.   And I love Bill's idea of getting rid of the channels!  Bill, can you privide a breakout between materials and labor?  While Ezio was still active in construction, I has an account at the US office, at that time in Elmsford NY.  I will try to re-activate!

Stephanie,

I will not have all of the detail, but some. I know the retail price per yard is $100-125. If you can buy it wholesale, it is about $55 from a distributor. If you are a contractor or decorator, you might be able to buy it wholesale. Then, of course, there are roll short ends, seconds, and discontinued colors for a wide range of pricing below $50, but I am sure that you would not want those.

Unfortunately, I paid retail for the best color (I think) which is Ivory. I will know the total yards used. I bought enough to do the entire boat, but I plan to only do the salon. The UltraSuede in the rest of the boat is perfect. I will know the labor and foam combined costs but I will not have the foam detail costs because the guy I am using submitted a total price for labor and foam. His price matched my estimate, so I was happy...now if I could just get out of VAT!!!

Generally speaking most upholsterers enjoy making profit on the sale of the fabric as well as profit on labor and foam. I got lucky when I found this one...he was fine with me supplying the fabric.

Bill ,

I would appreciate receiving photos as you proceed with the new cushions.

Are you re doing the entire boat or just the saloon?
