[Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Would you buy all electric no diesel Amel?

Andrew & Kate Lamb

There is a high end solution described at http://www.torqeedo.com/en/products/hybrid-drives - not sure if this really exists or is just marketing but I thought it was quite interesting as it doesn’t get rid of reliance on diesel but might potentially extend range. I suspect it is a very expensive solution though.

The PDF was a very good read. I would like to know what year it was written. Looks like about 2012. It is interesting that it cost them 21,000 to convert and they are saving about 2,100 a year in fuel costs. They have a bit less power (Their choice) but a quieter sail. Seems that weight was the same but they used lead batteries. Lead batteries weighing 128 lbs. Lithium would weigh about 30 each so the total would be 180 lbs vs their 768 but at perhaps 3 times the cost. I wonder what speed improvement they would get with a ship being 500 lbs lighter, not much I would think.

What a strange topic.

Many a great sailor has circumnavigated in a boat without an engine and I know a cruising family that have sailed from Australia to Japan and back without and engine (and still have no engine). A strong outboard can occasionally be used for harbours. Not my cup of tea, but why not a real adventure without using fossil fuels. Forget an Amel and use a boat that does without a propellor altogether and just has sails. :)

While we all dream, I do not think that your dreams interest most of us, and they have absolutely nothing to do with Amel Yachts. It is true that oil has a high energy density but it can also be quite hard to get at some ports and costs a lot at others. We are often looking at over 1000$ just to tank up. It also runs out as we don't have huge tanks on the ship.

Mr. Bill Rouse, I think he might have made one had the tech been good enough during his life but it was not. It is only in the last few years that motors, batteries and solar panels have improved enough to even be considered. I feel that he would have build one, if it improved the capabilities of his design.

I can't make a champagne maker but how about a bubbly water maker and an alcohol still? Or carbonated water and wine? Would that do?

The basics of the idea are simple loose the diesel engine, tank (or just reduce it for a hybrid design) and lead batteries and add the solar panels, the motor and light battery. It is not like you are doing any real damage to the ship. It could all be put back without to much work. Might need to find some low wattage appliances or lose others.

This has to be one of the worst and most unfriendly emails I have ever received on ANY list.
You should be proud of yourself.

I in fact do not own an Amel yet. I am looking into buying one. It is my dream.

Ya, I studied TCM. It has nothing to do with anything here. It is just my default signature on every email I send out to anyone. It is my official title, it IS part of my name. Sorry you don't like it. As for advertising, what do you think the chances are that someone here on this list lives close to me and will become my pt? I can tell you right now that I have a better chance of winning the lotto that I don't buy.

I have been dreaming of putting in an electric motor on a super maramu. That is why I posted here. As I said, it is a thought experiment. It is a bit beyond me why you find this so offensive. I also wish to to thank those that were involved in that thread. I learned a lot! As you pointed out by my title, I don't sell or make anything to do with boats.

And a last thought, I did help someone here by posting about their lighting problem.  Just because I don't own does not mean I can't help.

I am also here to learn.

As far as reviewing my application? That is just plain nuts. If admin does not like a post then they can remove it and send me a warning email. I would be shocked if these things happened.

I truly hope you are on a normal Amel owner!

Best,

PS I am sorry the rest of you have to read this post. I find it quite objectionable but you can't let negative PR like this go unchallenged.

LOL, and what does all that mean?
PHD is clear but in what? What was your theses? And, Certified General Accountant is CGA and the rest? Also financial stuff? Interesting.

Learning a person job, studies and hobbies in a great way to start to get to know them.

I do as work; art, chinese med and computer programming and I help a tree doctor.

Hobbies; programming, plants, fish, art (mostly photography and 3d art (blender 3d), spoon carving), med, stone age skills, Go, snorkeling, sailing, science fiction, writing, skiing, German, Linux, ham radio, and helping people.

I would like to help people stop being so hard on nature and to find better ways to communicate and help each other and to heal emotionally.

Bill also gets my support.

There is enough to do to keep a Super Maramu well maintained.
In my case, the diesel cost is negligible compare to the cost of owning the vessel.

This thread was inactive for a week and it has done it job. I got great answers and learned a lot.
I  want to thank those that were so nice and helpful.

Clearly the conversion is doable but the benefits don't seem to be more than the cons.

All this new unpleasantness is uncalled for and not helpful. Just let the thread RIP.
