[Amel Yacht Owners] Re: What size of anchor Rockna for Maramu.

Our 1985 Maramu "Chara" has a Rocna 33 and I needed to extend the anchor roller to make it fit properly. I've been happy with the holding. Bob On Feb 13, 2016, at 12:24 AM, jjjk12s@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

I have Rocna 40kg purchased after numerous setting issues with original anchor (which I kept as backup). The Rocna sets first try always and has never dragged on me. I know it will eventually but so far it is much better than CQR Type that came with boat. No fitting issues on roller and no dropping or retrieving problems Ben Driver La Bella Vita SM #347 On Feb 13, 2016, at 8:25 PM, Bob bob.sarff@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

I also changed to a Rocna 40 and we are very happy with that, however we got rid of the CQR 33 kg we had, it is difficult to store and very cumbersome to handle in case you need to take an extra anchor out in the dingy. I'm thinking of geting a Fortress fx 55 or fx 85 as a back up, should be easier to stow, much easier to lay out with the dingy, They get very good ratings at most tests. Anyone having any experience with the Fortress? or have an other idea for back up? The fortress are very expensive as well as the spade Aluminium anchor, which also seams as a good back up anchor

I have an FX 55 in stern lazerette. It is light but not small so need to allow adequate space to store . Several suppliers offer a rail mounting for this anchor which makes it quickly accessible in an emergency. Of course You have another piece of hardware on deck. It is great to have an aluminum anchor to take out by dinghy . Ben Driver La Bella Vita SM #347 On Feb 20, 2016, at 5:11 PM, osterberg.paul.l@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

Hi Paul. I have a large Fortress (sorry I don't know what size) that was on the boat when I got her. It's only been out of the bow locker once when I tried to kedge off a grounding in the Bahamas. I couldn't get it to set in the marle. I'll try it again when I need two anchors, but with my Rocna 40 that may be a while. Kent SM 243 Kristy On Feb 20, 2016, at 4:11 PM, osterberg.paul.l@... Hi Paul, The cheaper alternative to Fortress is Guardian, made by the same company. As I understand it, it's just the finishing quality of the surface that's different (not shiny polished) but the holding power is the same. I have the Guardian G37 in the aft lazarrette. It fits in the middle on the forward bulkhead standing up, attached with a rubber strap and fitted with 10m of chain, ready to be deployed. I've used it a couple of times in high winds as a tandum anchor in front of my 33kg Rocna. It's easy to handle and take out with the dinghy as a kedge anchor as well. Hi Gerhard, I've been contemplating how to set and retrieve a tandem anchoring system. I've got a bad back and am having trouble visualizing a way to do it that doesn't involve a lot of bending over the rail and lifting. How do you do it? Thanks, Kent SM243 Kristy On Feb 21, 2016, at 4:30 AM, pepinoamel <no_reply@...> wrote:

Hi Kent, I'm afraid it does involve a bit of bending over and my back is also not too good. So I don't really know an easy way but the way I do it is: 1. I use 10 metres of 10mm chain on the Guardian. I have to reach along the Rocna to get to the front of it and attach the chain to the Rocna . I then lower the Guardian by lifting it over the railing into the water. 2. When retrieving it, the Rocna comes up all the way in its usual position with the chain hanging over the back of the fluke. I then attach a 10mm line to the Guardian chain, just in front of where the chain is attached to the Rocna, and bring that line around to the starboard roller to the cleat. This is a safety precaution because when you unshackle the Guardian chain from the Rocna you could easily drop it. After that I unshackle the chain from the Rocna and bring the Guardian in on the starboard roller. It's not back saving but I'm not doing it every day and it certainly feels better at times to have a second anchor out. Gerhard Hoffmann Pepino SM381 Evia, Greece |

Hi Ben,
My SM "Life is Good" is 2002 model. I also plan to buy Rocna 40 Kg. I know that the anchor cradle on SM was changed soon after my boat was builed. Does your boat anchor cradle look as on my boat? See attached photo. Vladimir Sonsev SM345 |

Hi Kent. I was shown a method that I use. 10 meters of chain connecting the anchors. 12 meters of floating rope shackle to shackle (floating so it doesn't tangle) conecting the anchors. Bring number one anchor up on windlass. Shackle it. Release gypsy. Put rope around smooth windlass winch and use windlass to pull up. Still have to do the last bit by hand. Hope this helps. I strongly suggest to read this article by Peter Smith begore attempting to apply tandem anchoring. http://www.petersmith.net.nz/boat-anchors/tandem-anchoring.php Just copy the link in your browser Cheers Rink _____________________________ From: simms simms@... I have an FX 23 as a stern anchor. It holds very well and can be a pain to dig out, but that's a good thing. I have a piece of drain pipe, an end plug glued on at the bottom and a couple of drain holes drilled on. Two saw cuts halfway down either side accommodate the anchor and three metres of stainless steel chain. The pipe is fastened upright to the stern push pit stanchions. It's accessible. It's cheap to make. I pinched the idea from a fellow sailor. The SS chain is much cleaner in the dinghy and chandlery soften have and end length going cheap. Ian. Ocean Hobo.
