Haul-out facilities in Grenada
We are moving our boat out of hurricane box from St Martin to Grenada next month. We will be back in California for three months visiting family so a little uncomfortably leaving boat in the water unless closely managed by someone. We could use a recommendation for safe place to leave the boat there - preferably out of the water. We would appreciate an recommendations. Ben Driver La Bella Vita SM #347 |

We are hauling out at Clarke's Court in two days time. Visited the yard today and all looks fine, but as it just opened last year there is still work in progress on the back up infrastructure like cafe, accommodation chandlers etc. but boat storage and security are looking good. There is one SM already out - 'jet Lag'. Don't know them yet.

One thing Bill neglected to mention is that Spice Island Marine Services has filled to capacity in the past (don't know if that will be the case this year but they are sufficiently out of the hurricane corridor according to insurance companies) so if you plan to haul out there, you might need to make a reservation. We hauled out there last Feb and in addition to yard storage, we opted for a monthly check where they open up the boat to air it out and check for leaks as well as check to make sure the shore power is still on. We have the shore power on only for the battery charger as we had a terrible experience with a yard worker unplugging us in Barcelona and we had the refrigerator on with food in it. Even if it had been checked once a month the mess could still have occurred, so we always empty the fridge and the freezer and leave them open when we leave now. It's not cheap ($734/mo) but not much in the Caribbean is. Dennis Johns Libertad Maramu #121 Spice Island Marine Services Grenada |

Hi Ben:
We have hauled out at Spice Island Marine yard 4 times. Always had a good experience. Our first time there was the second year the yard was open and one year before hurricane Ivan (thank goodness) the Cat 4 hurricane that destroyed all the boats in the yard and 80% of the structures on Grenada. It pushed the jacks stands through the hulls of the boats and layer them all down. There were major improvements in the yard after that with better anchors, better positioning in a chevron pattern, and better drainage etc. I can highly recommend the yard to you. There are laundry facilities on sight, and the Budget Marine store is in the yard as well as canvas and sail shops etc. As an aside, we stayed in the Cool Runnings apartments while hauling and re-commissioning. It is about a 2 block walk from the yard. Basic but priced right with AC, kitchenette, and comfortable beds. Clean and secure with guard. Small breakfast/lunch restaurant on site.
