[Amel Yacht Owners] Toilet base forward head
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Eric, Since your hull number is near mine and I did this job on the aft toilet a few months ago, I can tell you a couple things. The part is available, and it comes with all of the parts, nuts, washers, bolts, etc. that you need to do the job. The base bolts screw into a stainless steel plate which is epoxied under the fiberglass floor. I believe that you might find at least one of the bolts difficult to remove. If I remember correctly, there are three bolts holding the base that you have to the floor. The easiest thing to do might be to use a dremmel to cut off the plastic tabs on the base that the bolts go through, then remove the toilet. Use plenty of penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Using a socket wrench move the bolts forward and backward until they ease and can be unscrewed. Assemble the toilet and macerator pump on the new base before installing the toilet back on the floor...this will be the easiest way to install that macerator pump and align its O ring. Mark "Cream Puff" had a problem and broke a bolt...had to drill and retap. Bill Rouse

I had the same problem (base cracked). I was able to unscrew the nuts off the bolts (the bolt seems to me part of the fiberglass bottom and unfortunately I broke one) The main problem is that I was not able to find a replacement base… The exact part number is now a different base which will not fit… So I glue the old one together and apply it with 4200. Hope someone get a better answer… Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico --------------------------------------------

Eric,
Alexandre is correct. Jabsco changed the design of the part and did not change the part number. I searched high and low for an old style base and am convinced none are available.
I had the same issue with the cracking bases. I removed the old base and used fiberglass mat and resin to repair it. So far so good. Both bases cracked. The older repair is now going on two years (aft). The forward head was recently repaired.
To remove the base you will need to back out the four bolts holding it. There are no nuts on the underside. Under the fiberglass floor is a stainless steel plate and the bolts go into threaded holes into this plate.
Be careful not to force the bolts!!!! They will break (ask me how I know this). Use some lube and be VERY patient.
Hope this helps.
With best regards,
Mark

But as Bill said mine and your model are older and use a different base… Nice repaid on your side! How did you see/access the steel plate under the fiberglass? I still would like to remove the broken bolt and put a new one!!! Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico --------------------------------------------

Alexandre, Stainless bolts into stainless plate tend to gawl and seize unfortunately. It's why most turnbuckles have bronze bodies and stainless studs. In the event that you actually remove the plate consider replacing with silicon bronze and you won't have fight to remove the bolts in the future. The best source I know of is Atlas Metals for the bronze plate. If you keep the stainless plate, never seize does help prevent problems. Best of luck. James Sent from Samsung Mobile

Well, for those of us who are not yet victims of CHS-"Cracked Head Syndrome"-it seems like a good idea do clean any deposits and corrosion on the bolts and spray with a penetrating oil, hoping it will work its way down. I have noticed in the past that bolts sprayed with Corrosion-X will free up over time, so it may be a good choice as prevention and penetration. Dedicated penetrating oil may be even better. Anyway it sounds like a really good idea to do it now.

Alexandre,
When repairing the forward head, I broke a bolt. I successfully drilled a hole inside the bolt and tried using a reverse thread bolt extractor but it broke off inside the bolt. This left no other option than to use a different hole in the base of the toilet. I thought I would need to install some type of bolt anchor seems only the top side of this area is accessible. We are in the Bahamas so my access to parts is very limited. I planned to drill a hole and resin in a nut. I hit the steel plate under the fiberglass when drilling a pilot hole and realized then how Amel constructed this. I drilled a new hole for my new bolt and using a tap and die threaded the steel plate for the new nut.
Hope this helps.
With best regards,
Mark

Alexandre, I can share your pain of broken off stainless bolts, best of luck. It looks like I will be closing on my Amel next month. Having spent 3 days with Michel Charpentier during the inspection I would like to echo the many other owners who had a great experience with Michel. I found Michel to be very knowlegeable about Amel but he was always cautious of trying to answer questions he was unsure about without doing some research. In other words when I got an answer it was the correct one, not just a guess. Perhaps of even more importance I found him to be a man of his word, more than fair and a pleasure to get to know. I took a little different approach to fixing the broken base for the forward head. It's the second time it has failed, in 6-8ft seas both times, with inexperienced crew. Since the original base had 4 bolt holes (it failed too, after 13 years), and the new one only has 3 bolt holes (I had drilled a new inboard hole for the center hole in the new base, and just screwed a large screw into it...didn't last long) I opted to use a 3/8inch piece of pvc board, cut to fit the old base using the rubber mat that fit between the old base and the floor of the shower stall as a template. I glued it to the base with 5200, and cut two new 1/16" rubber seals that would fit between the PVC board and the floor (I think this would allow a little give instead of bolting the base directly to the floor.) I drilled the rubber seals and the PVC with holes to fit the holes in the floor, and bolted the base with it's glued-on PVC and the rubber mats to the floor. I filled the hole in the floor that matched the inboard (center) hole of the base with epoxy putty and redrilled it for at large SS screw. The whole thing feels more stable than it has ever been, but I don't know how long it will last. If it survives more than a few months, I'll post some pics of the finished product in place. This is very good when Michel was unsure of the answer he did research. Welcome to the family again! Alexandre --------------------------------------------

Date: Monday, May 9, 2016, 3:33 PM Alexandre, Stainless bolts into stainless plate tend to gawl and seize unfortunately. I was able to unscrew the nuts off the bolts (the bolt seems to me part of the fiberglass bottom and unfortunately I broke one) The main problem is that I was not able to find a replacement base… The exact part number is now a different base which will not fit… So I glue the old one together and apply it with 4200.
