[Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Perkins Prima 60 Dimensions

John,

I have had  good luck with the Yanmar engines.  How did the size and weight work out for you?  Did the beds have to be altered much?  Is that a turbocharged engine?

Best,

James

John,

It will be up to Michel but I would like to see some oil placed in the cylinders,  spin the engine up to get oil pressure and be verified to be free before trying to start the engine to reduce the chance of damage from a dry start.  I think that rolling the engine over by hand  as Bill suggested is a good idea and should indicate if there is a problem.

Your right, it does not take much to remove a valve cover.

How long have you owned Popeye?

Best,

James

James,

If you are doing this before buying the boat it sounds like there is not too much you can take apart but if you have concerns about seized valve guides then just removing the rocker cover to observe is not too intrusive.

Bill,
I am hopeful that the engine will be free and that tools will not be needed to roll the engine over as you state. I have been able to break engines that were only lightly seized by gently rocking the crank back and forth using a socket wrench and wanted to be prepared if that turned out to be the case. If it doesn't free up easily then I agree pulling the head should be the next step. Thanks for the advice. James

James,

You do not need a socket, or a wrench.

You said you were going to remove glow-plugs or injectors. With either removed you can turn the crankshaft by hand using the belt to the alternator. If it does not turn by hand, rust has probably set in between rings and cylinder walls. If this has happened, forcing things with a socket could break rings and/or score cylinder walls. If it will not turn by hand with injectors removed, I suggest stripping the head off. I was lucky once a long time ago using penetrating oil to free rings from cylinder walls, but I was very lucky to do it without damage.

James,

I have never heard of covering the air intake to reduce the cranking pressure but that is a great idea..I will remember that one.  My plan was remove the glow plugs, inject a bit of oil, then gently roll the engine over to insure it is free.  (I have bent a push rod on one engine that had been sitting a long time due to a stuck valve.)  Maybe add some fresh oil to help lube the top end.  Then if the engine is free, crank it over for long enough to get oil pressure with the glow plugs removed..and some rags over the holes. Reinstall the glow plugs and then try to start using freshwater since the boat is on the hard. All of this would need to be cleared by Michel of course.  Thanks for the input.

James

Yes, 24mm, as I recall, but suggest you simply crank the engine while holding the "stop" button so it won't start. This will be more effective in circulating lube oil than a slow hand turn. If you wish, you can also cover the air intake to reduce cranking force. Of course, don't crank too long with the sea water inlet open.
Good luck,
Craig, Sangaris, SN68 with M50.

Joe,
Many thanks for the suggestion, I will get that ordered right away.  The manual may not arrive in time for visiting the boat so if anyone else might know the socket size for the bolt on the front of the crank on the Perkins Prima 60 please let me know.  Thanks, James
