For the new owners like myself who are intimidated by maintenance task they have never done performed, I illustrated the “Basic maintenance” of the Lofrans Tigres Windlass.

I really would like the more experience owners to look at the document and make sure I did not make any mistake (too much grease, etc.) and correct me.


Since I purchase my vessel (end of 2012) I had never serviced the windlass… Why?
because I don’t use it much and gave priority to other systems that i use all the time.
Consequently some parts were very difficult to extract.

Now that I am familiar with it, I will definitely service it on a regular basis (starting every 3 months).
I believe this will be much easier and quicker.

This also helped me to understand better how my windlass works.

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

where do you put grease in the Tigres Lovean Windlass?
My Windlass is 25 Years old and i maintain it every 5 years ( cabels  new oil not grease! )
I use my windlass every time often wirh 70 m of 10mm chain, so far never had a problem. It's a very good product and save

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

Glad all looks ok Bill,

I “guess” if the windlass manufacturers did not want the possibility of the cone to slip, they would have bold them together…
Mine definitely did not slip before…

It was interesting as i put my new Rocna anchor on, then pull the chain up, as it was slipping, so I just tight the wing nut, this is also how I realize the emergency handle is a perfect fit to tight the wing nut as well 1) giving leverage 2) keeping hands at a safe distance.

I did read the manual, and that is why I know that you should grease the cone. The following is a copy of the manual in English. Like I said previously, I have had discussion with people who are not aware of this.

Below are indicated the operations and the period we consider essential to get the best efficiency and performance of your anchor windlass.
1. Clean all the outer surfaces and the hidden points with fresh water and remove the salt layer.
2. Grease the outer rotation parts . Particularly the main shaft thread and the clutch cones. Check for evidences of corrosion and stress.
3. Check the terminals of the electric motor and the Control Box. Test the drop of tension at the terminals.
4. Check the rotation and the speed of the electric motor. If it runs slowly check the electric motor brushes and clean with abrasive paper. Replace when necessary.
5. Replace of the all outer seals. The geabox is proper filled with SAE 90 long life oil.
6. Remove the windlass from the deck to clean the salt under the basement.

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

I put grease on the main shaft, and even on the gipsy parts.
Since I am a fairly new owner, this is why I ask other owner to comment:

My owner manual (which is the 2nd to last link) called called: Lofrans Tigres (and other) installation, operation & maintenance program (.pdf 1.0 mb)
says on page 4:
2. Grease the outer rotation parts . Particularly the main shaft thread and the clutch cones.
You can see the complete maintenance schedule Lofrans recommend on this link.

old and i maintain it every 5 years ( cabels  new oil not
grease! )I
use my windlass every time often wirh 70 m of 10mm chain, so

Alex,

Lofrans designs the cone to slip inside the gypsy so that internal damage does not occur on the windlass. I have helped several Amel owners who unfortunately did not know to grease this. The key on the shaft warps, bends and cuts into the key groove on the windlass cone which is inside the gypsy, and/or the windlass will get pulled out of the deck when excessive force is applied through the anchor chain.

Always use a snubber...mine is a 1 1/2" multiplait nylon line that is 7 meters long. I attach it to the large bow cleat and a pelican hook on the chain. I never anchor without it.

Maybe SM "RASCAL" will post some photos, and/or comment.

Mine definitely did not slip before…

It was interesting as i put my new Rocna anchor on, then pull the chain up, as it was slipping, so I just tight the wing nut, this is also how I realize the emergency handle is a perfect fit to tight the wing nut as well 1) giving leverage 2) keeping hands at a safe distance.

I have been servicing various windlasses for 40 years and have used grease on the cones and shafts of all of them lest they tend to seize up rather quickly. Regular maintenance is important as the grease gets squeezed out and washed off so a hydrophobic grease seems to work the best. I have normally used the white lithiums only because they tend to stain the deck and sails less. The best white lithium that I have come across for this application (and winches/turnbuckles as well) is the Vari-prop grease. I think that you have been getting some excellent advice already, so just adding my own 2 cents.

when I looked at it it was greased and oiled. But I will do like you said. Maybe I was lucky with my windlass even I did not made a full maintenance every year.

I did read the manual, and that is why I know that you should grease the cone. The following is a copy of the manual in English. Like I said previously, I have had discussion with people who are not aware of this.

Below are indicated the operations and the period we consider essential to get the best efficiency and performance of your anchor windlass.
1. Clean all the outer surfaces and the hidden points with fresh water and remove the salt layer.
2. Grease the outer rotation parts . Particularly the main shaft thread and the clutch cones. Check for evidences of corrosion and stress.
3. Check the terminals of the electric motor and the Control Box. Test the drop of tension at the terminals.
4. Check the rotation and the speed of the electric motor. If it runs slowly check the electric motor brushes and clean with abrasive paper. Replace when necessary.
5. Replace of the all outer seals. The geabox is proper filled with SAE 90 long life oil.
6. Remove the windlass from the deck to clean the salt under the basement.

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

Alexandre,
   I have been servicing
various windlasses for 40 years and have used grease on the
cones and shafts of all of them lest they tend to seize up
rather quickly.  Regular maintenance is important as the
grease gets squeezed out and washed off so a hydrophobic
grease seems to work the best.  I have normally used the
white lithiums only because they tend to stain the deck and
sails less.  The best white lithium that I have come across
for this application (and winches/turnbuckles as well) is
the Vari-prop grease.  I think that you have been getting
some excellent advice already, so just adding my own 2
cents.

You've inspired me to tackle this job!  A question: I am having a lot of trouble removing the outer clutch cone.  Did you simply hammer screwdrivers in the very tight joint between it and the chain gypsy?  I've put a lot of WD-40 in and will let that work for a bit and try again.

Is it possible to remove the entirety of the inner/chain gypsy/outer clutch cone or does the key interefere with this?

Good morning Duane,

I am glad to inspired you !!!
I also had lots of trouble removing the out erclutch (and everything in fact).
This was my fault, as since I purchase the vessel (late 2012) I never serviced the windlass…

It took me several hours, using “gentle” brute force.
First I used lots of ZEP 45 (penetrating oil similar to WD40).

Yes, I use small screw drivers to slowly make a gap between the outer clutch and the gipsey/chain wheel.
I used the emergency handle to rotate the gipsy then use the screw driver again.
Just to remove the outer clutch might have take me an hour…

You will have the same issue with the gipsey/chain wheel.
Thinking back, I could have used a large bearing or prop puller for the gipsy.
I used simultaneously 2 screw drivers to evenly move it. I also used a long screw driver and slowly hammer (and still rotate using the emergency handle)

Same difficulty for the gipsey holder.
I used simultaneously 2 screw drivers to slowly push it away.
(Could not use a bearing puller there)

Same on the other side for the aluminum Drum.
(Could not use a bearing puller there without taking the risk to damaged the thread even if you put a longer bolt)

It was may be 5 hours to put it apart.
Then 2 hours cleaning the next day.
Putting everything back (once clean) was so was. Just slide on like butter!


Personally, instead to remove entirely the inner/chain gypsy/outer clutch I would follow what the maintenance manual suggest.
The key will not interfere, BUT it will require more force and will have more friction on the key.

Just to follow up, I used the gear puller on the chain gypsy.  While it seemed to be welded in place when using screwdrivers and hammer, the gear puller took it off with almost no effort.  The outer clutch plate then literally fell out of the chain gypsy.  

Now I will have to resort to screwdrivers and tap, tap, tap for the inner clutch cone...

Thanks for the update Duane,

This morning I was wondering how this was going!
So the gear puller seems to be the way (for the gipsy and outer clutch).

On the port side, if the washer doesn’t come out, may be with some time of hook you can force it out.
Then, you could put back the bolt (or preferably a longer one) then use the gear puller.
But I would be very careful not to damage the thread of the bolt on the main shaft.
