Hi all,
I want to remove my rudder to change the stuffing and do a general inspection, but have no clue as to how this is done, so would very much appreciate a point in the right direction.
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Bill, I’ll give it a try. I was wondering if there may be anything else that needs to be checked rudder-wise hence the notion of removing it.
Cheers,
Paul

You do not need to remove the rudder on the 54 to change the packing. You need to remove the top of the rudder post (the quadrant). Then remove the packing nut from the rudder post, remove the old packing, then insert new packing from Amel, and tighten the nut. In 90 days, you will likely need to tighten the nut again.
I have more detailed instructions, but considering your experience, the above will likely work for you.

Hi Bill,Does that advice pertain to the SM also? Or does changing the packing require a haul-out?Thanks,Tom PeacockSM 240 AletesMartiniqueOn Jan 15, 2020, at 9:17 PM, CW Bill Rouse <brouse@...> wrote:You do not need to remove the rudder on the 54 to change the packing. Bill,
After painstakingly digging out one of the existing stuffing rings I see no sign of dampness and the one I see below it seems to be in pretty good condition. As far as I know this is the first time this has been done and the boat is 12 years old. So I’m wondering if there is any point in going any further? I could just replace the one I dug out. What would be your advice?
And if I do need to replace all three then is there a prescribed technique for removing them? For the top one I just hacked away any which way I could!
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
The rudder stuffing box should be the only thing that may need attention on your 54.

Hi Tom,
not disagreeing with Bill at all (and certainly agree with the need for flat water) but I have done both the bow thruster and the rudder packing in the water. I would consider the rudder job lower risk if there is risk. I did have it suggested to me to put the dinghy on deck on the opposite end and fill it with water. I didn't try it but I would think it would be effective.

Tom,I don't believe there is a safe answer to your question. For example if you are at anchor with the boat rocking fore to aft, obviously you should not attempt this job.The packing should be above the waterline, buI have seen Amels so overloaded that it is not safe to use the bow thruster in the water tool.Since many Amels are overloaded and even calm marinas can have surges, I would do this job when out of the water, but I know that Amel Martinique has done this in the water. Each owner should evaluate his situation.

Bill,
Many thanks. I have just one more question (I hope!): when I replace the stuffing should I pack with grease?

Paul,
They are installed in layers. Sometimes, replacing the first layer is all that is needed, but there is no guarantee. If you replace the first layer, it may still leak at some point in the near future. That choice is yours.
I am not sure what tools you are using to remove the packing. There are many different tools available:
I hope this helps you.
