Duane, There a few coats of hard wax aft of the exhaust pipes. I use Roll-off for any soot. However- we motored for 10 days last spring with almost no soot. I believe the solution for me was Howes fuel treatment. Fair Winds Eric Amel Super Maramu #376

Carina, I apologize but I got distracted when aboard last weekend and forgot to see which black streak remover product I have aboard. It is one of these two:
https://www.fisheriessupply.com/sitesearch.aspx?keyword=black%20streak%20remover&sitesearch=true On another note, in my opinion, which is likely to be well-disagreed with, if your engine is running well and properly maintained then unless you're trailing visible smoke in the air, the black streak is nothing to worry about. Diesel is dirty, exhaust is smoke and if our exhausts discharged from the transom instead of from the side nobody would notice. By way of example, I have a home that is heated by diesel (home heating oil) furnace. The manufacturer specifies that it is required to be cleaned annually and every year the technician says it's running perfectly as he cleans 2 gallons of soot from the exhaust. |

As all the larger Ale mels are center cockpit and the exhaust exits on port of the center cockpit, this is not readily feasable as you would need to drill a hole in the engine bay aft bulkhead. This would destroy the “watertight bulkhead”. In my opinion, not a good idea. The Volvo TMD 22 seems the worst offender. Boats are a compromise and at time of construction these engines met the Amel requirement. You’ll likely live with the problem… like the rest of us… :-)

Is there any reason why you couldn’t fashion a short extension to the exhaust so it exits 5-10cm off the transom? Would that be enough to push 95% of the smuts away from the boat? |

Dear Carina,
Also use additive in my fuel – don’t have (much) soot at all but that might be bcoz I have the D3 H version which apparently runs more efficient than the D3 C. The soot I do have is from the ONAN.

I use “Black Streak Remover”. Takes it right off with just a bit of hand-polishing. It works great. There are several brands available; I’ll be aboard on Saturday and will reply further with the brand that has worked well for me.

we love our Amel 54 but we constantly struggle to keep the exhaust side of the hull clean. A battle we often loose and after just another couple of days that black spot on the side start growing back - So frustrating. It’s also very difficult to get rid of the soot as it seems to grow into the gelcoat. When in NZ we polished the boat with SealX and the result was stunning - for a couple of weeks. Over time we’ve tried many many products but we still struggling and it’s so hard to clean the soot away and to keep the hull side clean. what products do you use to get rid of the soot?
