Problem dismantling the main furler worm gear box
Have problem to dismantle the shaft (see picture) from the main furling gear box. I need to get off the Aluminum "NOB" that connect to the main furler.
The inner shaft with the Aluminium "NOB" is totally stuck. Any suggestion how the get the aluminium "NOB" off the inner shaft? Hopefully I can purchase the inner shaft from Maud, and maybe she has the Aluminium "NOB" as well. The Leroy Sumer gear box is available from Amel. Anyone who have manage to get the worm gear off the outer shaft? On the out haul gear box the worm gear is attached with a retaining ring and easy to take off, but no retaining ring to be found in the furling gear box? Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259 |

A few years ago I purchased bonfoglioli gear boxes from an outfit in Baltimore. They were $125 each. Hi Paul,
VERY familiar with that problem. Our gearbox was actually past it's use by so we set to and cut through the gear to extract the shaft. It wouldn't come out even with a hydraulic press. The shaft was badly pitted and clearly the steel/aluminium/saltwater combination had done its work. The knob and the shaft are one piece alloy and available from Maud No part #, just "Shaft for gearbox main furler" Eu139,00 Best regards Alan Elyse SM437 |

Hi Paul,
we had the same issue; After soaking in de-greaser I soaked it in vinegar essence for a few days and lots of WD40 for another day. The final job did a 10 ton hydraulic bearing puller like what you find at ebay "10 Ton Hydraulic Gear Puller and Bearing Jaw Separator Set Professional Kit" I put a SS screw (Allen hread) in the bottom of the Aluminum shaft to protect the thread and then pushed the aluminum piece out of the hollow steel shaft. It has to come out otherwise you can't get the bearing off. -- Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K # 417 |
