Identify this part

All,

I have seen this part before, but I cannot remember what it is used for. Any advice is appreciated. The threaded hole is about 18 or 19mm. The OD of the part is about 50mm.

That’s the bolt and washer for the spare fixed pitch prop.

The bottom part goes between the shaft nut and your prop (if it’s a fixed blade, not sure about folding). At least that’s where mine has always been.

Hi Bill.
I think to fix the propeller we have on board, as spare, instead of Autoprop.

I think it is the nut and locking washer  for the spare prop.

Yes, that’s right:

It is the screw for the spare fixed prop on SM’s. it is not for the autoprop.

The flat part has to be between the prop and the nut and has to be bend at the end of installation that the nut could not be “unscrewed” by itself.

The small lip of the flat part has to be placed into the slot of the prop.

I am about to install this part and do not understand how that washer keeps the nut from backing off.  If the “tooth” on the washer fits into the key-slot of the prop as described above, how does that keep the nut from backing off?   Anyone have a photo?

Ian Park

No photo Richard. Which model? My Santorin has a fixed prop. There is a washer between the prop and the coned nut. It fits into the key way slot. Tighten the bolt then use a sharp screwdriver to lift the edge of the washer and bend it onto the flat of the coned bolt.

I have the above pictured washer and nut.  The washer tooth fits into the keyway of the prop perfectly.   But if oriented that way, the nut is still free to spin.

Super Maramu.

I would appreciate it if someone who has installed the fixed prop will verify the image below and the correct way to lock the prop in place:

Bill,

You are correct. This style of locking prop washer is very common on French built boats using metric standard prop shaft tapers.

For boats using these, it is best to carry a spare washer.  They can be peened over to lock the nut a couple of times, but they eventually fatigue and fracture.  It is best practice to replace them each time the prop is removed.

Hi Bill;

Just completed this install under water. Confirm that your depiction is the correct way of installing the fixed prop. Attached please find some pictures of our final installation. Sorry for the blank screens in the screen shots. I have 4 monitors, so that’s how it comes out. But it is easy to zoom in and get a clear picture.

Respectfully;

Bill,

I had to trade out my prop for a short time while in the US. The boatyard swapped them for me. Once the fixed prop was on, the washer with the tab is next and then the nut. Once the nut was secure they bent the tab of the washer up to lock the nut in place.

With best regards,

Mark
