Anchor chain counter

Thanks Scott, good info. I’m amazed at all the positive feedback I’ve been getting on this comparatively trivial issue!

I had a similar problem, wherein the chain counter would count on its own, regardless of the anchor position. I had Alban in Martinique look at it and he cleaned the magnet. It worked for awhile and then quit completely. I am convinced it is the sensor that fails - not the magnet.
My approach was to replace the Lewmar A500 unit with the newer A560. It comes with a new sensor/magnet combination and uses a different technology. It requires 3 wires vs. the 2-wire system installed with the original Lewmar A500 on my A54. Fortunately, Amel was wise and they ran a 3-wire cable from the cockpit to the windlass. Getting the old sensor and magnet out of the windlass was the biggest issue, but I was able to do that and hook up the new sensor using the previously unused wire. The new display is a big improvement and actually self-calibrates. It was a lot more expensive ($500 USD) than simply replacing the sensor/magnet ($90 USD), but it really works and has proven very reliable. Keeping the buildup residue on the magnet is still important though. I am a happy camper now when I use the windlass - no more counting in my head as I deploy. Jamie Wendell Phantom, A54 #44

It's very easy to open up the windlass and see the magnet on the gypsy. On A54 #69, we have two windlasses, so I just took the gypsy from the port windlass and put it on starboard. There's no counter on port anyways and we barely use it, so the gypsy looked nearly new. By doing that, you could probably get quite a few more years of life and it will isolate whether the problem is the magnet or the sensor. If you look at the AutoAnchor manual, it shows you how to get into diagnostic mode to determine whether the sensors are getting power. That may help you figure out what's wrong. I suppose there could be wiring issues, but for us, it was easily remedied by swapping gypsies and hence, magnets. Good time to grease up the windlass, too. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

The magnet gets rusty. You may test the system , take off the gipsy and hold/turn a magnet above the reed relay and observe the counter Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54#162

Having had an intermittently working chain counter for the past two years (it could not record properly the chain going down, but was OK on the chain going up), I share my two cents which worked in my case: I dismounted and opened the unit in the cockpit and sprayed it with « WD40 contact ». It worked like a charm since then. The same recipe worked on our Hydra 2000, which was acting and stopped working at times; I spread the contacts and all the electronic boards and all went back to 100%. Again, sure it doesn’t apply in all cases, but it worked in ours!

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for that. Any idea where I can get one? I’ve contacted a couple of dealers but no reply so far.
The other thing is that I don’t actually know what the problem is other than that it stopped working. I just assume the sensor because, like you say, it is the most exposed component. It also was intermittent for a while before stopping completely. Wolfgang from Elise suggested it might be the magnet so I probably should get one of those too.

Hi Paul, It is a simple reed contact, example Meeder. Costs like 99 cents. Better order some spare, as the windlass is quite exposed to saltwater. When connected to the wire, dip it in sikkaflex or epoxy.

Yes, the 54 and SM are different in terms of chain counters. I’m pretty sure the SM “button” on the windlass is not magnetic, the proximity sensor only requires a metal counter.

Hello Paul. The Amel 54 uses a vertical capstan Lewmar windlass with an integral chain counter as part of the system. It is entirely different than the Pouchon supplied counter on the Lofrans horizontal capstan windlass on the Super Maramu 53

Hi Paul,
I have an Amel53 with a Lofrans Tigres windlass. Don’t know if you have the same. On the Tigres the sensor is in the black tube housing attached to the Tigres (by Amel). You need to remove the cover (2 bolts) and then you can unscrew the tube housing and remove the old sensor. The new sensor will come with a long cable which you need to shorten. Disconnect the old ones and re-connect the new ones. Align the new sensor the same way as the old one was placed. I fixed the new sensor with some sika and two pieces of plastic form a tie wrap.
Again, this is on my 2001 SM2K with a Lofrans Tigres (which I btw upgraded with a new motor which is 1500W).
Best regards, Rink

I’m away from the boat and cannot find anything on the Lewmar online store so I would much appreciate if someone could advise the part number.
