Tender Amel 54 #dinghy

We are looking for a new tender, as our existing 12 year old Zodiac Classic foldable with aluminum floor planks that came with our Amel, is starting to have some of the glue joints fail. It has been a great stable ride that planes with a 20HP with 4 people. We have been considering the Highfield line and will not be onboard prior to ordering, Therefore, we would appreciate comments on the following issues:

  1. How does the CL310 or CL340 fit on the Davits?
  2. PVC or Hypalon? We will most likely be in the Med for another 3 years and then onto the Caribbean. AT this point our ongoing plan is to continue sailing West. about 6 months every year.
  3. Our existing 3.5 Meter Zodiac, does present some challenge trying to leave the dock, while Med Moored in a cross wind, if we have yachts at both sides. The tender is about 18-24 inches wider than the stern, therefore the bow on the tender can get caught in the stanchions of the adjacent yacht. In extreme conditions, we lower the tender and tow behind until we are clear of the dock and then bring the tender up on Davits. Does anyone have a better solution?
  4. What is your general impression of the quality, ride and longevity of the highfield line?
  5. What other tender lines have you used that you could recommend?
Thanks in advance for all input.

Hi Mohammed & Aty,

We chose a deep v AB 9.5UL and it has done yeoman service for us. However, if we had to do it now, we’d consider OCD TENDERS from NZ.

Very good design including beach wheels!  Very popular

Good luck

Hello M&A,
My neighbors tender is a brand I hadn't heard of before called 3D https://www.3dtender.com/ALUMINIUM-SEMI-RIGID-TENDERS-147-64-0-0.html
My purchase was the Highfield 310 and didn't want to wait for the Hypalon as they were unsure when they could get one in Gibraltar. I believe that the extra investment in Hypalon pays for itself. The 3D tender when side by side is identical to the Highfield. My 310 is at the limit of width for the 54. And we are restricted to keeping it on the aft.
I wish I had the OCTender that was on the back of my boat. I regret not making it the one and only demand when purchasing my boat. They are very nice, hindsight 20/20.

Safe travels, and wishes the world opens soon.

My PVC dinghy suffered and expired in the Caribbean and we were recommended Highfield which we bought in hypalon. Pleased with it although no longer in the Caribbean. If headed there, most cruisers fit ‘chaps’ which IMO are worth the expense ( also an engine ‘chap’). Hypalon seems to be the best choice for tropical climate.

Hi Mohammad, Hi Aty,

We very briefly met as you were leaving  when we were both anchored off Corfu town last summer.

I bought Amelia with her Caribe included and it is still going strong. Hypalon pontoons and GRP rigid hull. I highly recommend this brand.

In my opinion Hypalon is well worth the extra expense. I also believe that if you have the habit of leaving an aluminium hulled rib in the water the whole time corrosion and adhesion of the pontoons to the hull can be a problem. If however you are in the habit of hoisting the dinghy on your davits every evening that may not be a consideration.

Hi Mohammad,

this year we bought a Highfield CL360 in Hypalon. It fits perfectly on the AMEL davits (Cooney Simpson).
Hypalon should be chosen if the dinghy has been in salt water for a longer period and is exposed to strong sunlight.
We have a powerful outboard motor (Yamaha 25PS) with which the CL 360 can drive perfectly over long distances, even with several people. The aluminum hull is very light (the CL360 weighs only approx. 70kg) and thanks to the good V-shape it drives very well over the waves, even at higher speeds.
Incidentally, the new Yamaha 25PS still fits in the aft locker on the outboard motor bracket ... a perfect place for the outboard motor for longer sea passages or winter storage.
In addition, the CL360 fits perfectly (upside down) on the aft deck ... also for longer sea passages or winter storage.
We are very happy with this dinghy choice.

Many greetings and thanks again for your help regarding the oil pressure sensor this summer!

Hello,

Thank you for attracting attention to the Pischel RIB if Dusseldorf 21 is not cancelled I will have a better look.

We have had both a Caribe 10X and a AB AL9.

Global quality is very good but Caribe Paint on AL floor peeled away quickly.

For the Caribe some details are a little cheap like the hinges of the forward locker that needs reinforcement. The fuel line under deck is  impossible to replace. The lifting points need reinforcement. We have a Tohatsu 15HP 2cycle which is very good. And also a Torqueedo electric 1003S that is very convenient since it is so light but the throttle handle needed replacement under warranty and the electrical connections are fragile and need a lot of care not to be off centered before tightening.

Since tender theft is a growing nuisance has someone tried to put a GPS tracker relayed by the Sigfox network. Not sure it has world coverage mostly in the insecure regions?

Mohammad & Aty,

We have the Highfield 340 in Hypalon and have enjoyed it, and had no quality issues.  The length of the tender prevents the use of the gangway without first lowering the dinghy, which is an annoyance.  That being said, I have not measured to see what size dinghy would work without interfering with the gangway.

The ride is nice and the double floor keeps water from getting on everything.

Hi Aty & Mohammad,

Hope you guys are doing well with this COVID situation – I am not sure when I can get back to the boat in AUSTRALIA but I don’t think it will be before Q2 2021.

Although you asked about the HIGHFIELD just wanted to share since I know you appreciate (very) high quality stuff. 😊

I had 5 tenders in 18 months – 2 of them were HIGHFIELDS; I will save you the story.

Best dinghy, bar none, is the Offshore Cruising Tenders. They are located in NZ and only custom build. Expensive but, in my opinion, well worth the extra $$$$$

Hi Teun;

Nice to hear from you. We’re in the same “boat”. Have not been at the boat since October 2019 and hopeful that 2021 season will not be affected by COVID.

Which model of the offshore cruising tender did you end up with and what do you feel are the advantages over the inflatable ones?

Respectfully;

Hi Dirk;

Thanks for the input. Did you have to make any modifications to the lifting points to be able to lift the dinghy on the Davits or was it just plug and play? We currently have a 20HP Yamaha 4-stroke. Do you think this will plane with 4 people? We’d also like to be able to pull surfboards and other toys behind. Are there attachments at the transom for ski ropes and do you see any issues pulling with this tender?

Not sure where you are currently cruising, but do you have to moor stern to? If so, does the CL360 interfere with adjacent yachts when leaving the dock in a cross breeze?

Thanks Nick. I do recall the anchorage where we met. I think you were having some issues with your Genoa. I think you figured it out the solution in your sleep at night.

What size and model Caribe do you have? How does it fit on the Davits and how’s the ride in chop and breeze? We usually take long excursions either exploring or going for dives, kite surfing etc.

Thank you Randall;

Do you have the CL310 (Classic series)? How does it fit on the Davits and did you have to make any changes to the lifting points? What is your experience on the quality of the ride?

Happy Sailing;

Randall

Hi Mohammed & Aty,

We chose a deep v AB 9.5UL and it has done yeoman service for us. However, if we had to do it now, we’d consider OCD TENDERS from NZ.

Very good design including beach wheels!  Very popular

Good luck

Mohammad,

Same here – 2020 completely shot as far as sailing. I wouldn’t be surprised if even Q2 2021 is optimistic for AUSTRALIA as I believe they will first have a 2 or 3 months travel bubble between NZ and OZ before even contemplating opening to the rest of the world. Even when that happens I wouldn’t be surprised travel originating from or coming via USA to be getting “special” attention/rules. .

I got the OC350 = 350 centimeters with the Delta panel; ladder; beachmaster wheels (absolutely fantastic); AMEL color coordinated burgundy rub rail; nav lights etc. etc.

They also have a full Carbon version which I did NOT order and I believe, since recently, a sailing dinghy.

Advantages:

  1. Karin and Russell are SUPER, SUPER, SUPER nice & easy going but highly professional people; a pleasure to work with.
  2. Very high freeboard; meaning ladies (and you) will not have a wet butt on arrival for lunch or dinner in the marina and/or your groceries will remain dry in choppy waters.
  3. Holds a lot of people and cargo
  4. Really planes extremely fast with only 15HP outboard; even with 4 adults on board. In fact OCT strongly discourages any outboard bigger than 15HP.
  5. Weight is only 48kg – was one of the main considerations especially after experiencing problems coming back from a nice & relaxed dinner at night on low tide and having a hard time getting the dinghy back in the water. Especially when you are old, feeble (hahahahaha) & alone or with a female companion.
  6. Lots & lots of (out of sight) storage
  7. Comes standard with 2 seats which also double as PFD’s
  8. Comes standard with 2 paddles; stored out of sight.
  9. Outboard tank and dinghy anchor can be stored (out of sight) in the bow under & around the bow compartment (open net) with a special vertical net to keep it there.
  10. Very effective anti-skid material on the railing, floor, bow etc.
  11. Comes with Dyneema bow & stern hook ups/points custom designed & placed for your davits.
  12. They can make custom adjustments if you require.

Disadvantages:

  1. Expensive
  2. Waiting time as custom made & to order ONLY. They don’t build “inventory” boats.
  3. Having to ship to your destination – they will handle for you as long as you pay 😊
  4. Did I mention expensive???

But absolutely worth it – I think, after having had 4 dinghies within 18 months before the OCT, I am qualified to tell the difference. BTW – the very first dinghy, which was on board when I got the boat, I loved the best as long as I was on anchor but just didn’t make sense to have on the boat during passage: a brand-new (6hrs) old, huge HIGHFIELD center console with 50HP HONDA outboard. Total listed weight 295KG while the davits are rated for 300KG. I suspected the 295KG listed weight for the dinghy to be w/o the 35 liter gas which would have put it well over the rated 300KG for the davits.

Check the OCT website and, in case you order, pls say hi to Karin for me.

Best Regards Teun

Hi Teun;

Nice to hear from you. We’re in the same “boat”. Have not been at the boat since October 2019 and hopeful that 2021 season will not be affected by COVID.

Which model of the offshore cruising tender did you end up with and what do you feel are the advantages over the inflatable ones?

Hi Mohammad and Aty,

actual I have a Plastimo 270 Hypalon wit GRP bottom and 6 HP Evinrude. Because I am sailing alone, it is important for me to have it easy to handle. Long distances, heavy weather I keep on deck and it fits between my mizzen traveller and mast. In the davids, I have a construction from La Rochelle. It works in some marina to lift it down and use the pasarella above and take care for your head. The SM space for rib is more less than at 54. I attach a picture. The last 20 years I put a lot of dingys in rubbish. The last on my previous boat was a Caribe L9 and and it was ecellent but get sold with my boat. the reason now for Plastimo was only the price under 2k € and Hypalon. If money is not important but the quality Pischel is my favorite. They will ask you the placing for the lifting hooks that it fit to your davids, the color of the tubes and everything you want. Final you have a rib personalized and not like everyone.
