Gib Track Plugs
I am getting ready to tackle a project I have been putting off for a while. I need to replace the screw cover plugs in the genoa track. I would like to get this right the first time and not have to redo this.
I ordered plugs from Amel. I was sent white semi opaque plugs the exact size of the hole. I am not sure these are going to have much UV protection so I have a question to those who have done this. Did you cover or treat the top of the plug with something such as paint before installation?
I have some Dow 737 goop to seal the plugs (this was recommended on this forum). I do not think this has any UV protection properties, so again, the same question. How do I protect the plug?
Many thanks.
With best regards,
Mark

Hi Mark. As an alternative to consider, here’s a different approach. After thoroughly cleaning out the old material I filled the hole with white silicone. It tends to shrink while curing so I left a significant crown of material when filling each hole. Then after several days (maybe a week to be sure) of curing cut the silicone flush with a razor blade. Very clean result and it looks like new after 4 years. Have not had the “opportunity” to dig one out to verify adhesion. I would be very interested to hear of other‘s solutions.

Hi Mark, Amel sent me plugs years ago. They looked like the original ones that came with my new boat, but they did not fit. Do your plugs fit the hole? Olivier suggested something like life caulk ,and as was mentioned put too much in the hole. Wait a week and trim it flush. Looks and works great. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Hi Mark, I replaced mine with the plugs from Amel. Very happy with the result. I cleaned out the holes and tapped the new plugs in with a rubber hammer. Takes a while digging the old and crumbling plugs but after 18 years I guess the plugs had done well. In the dark recesses of my mind there is a memory that there are two sizes. Not sure about that though. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl On 09 December 2020 at 16:16 Mark Erdos <mcerdos@...> wrote:

Thanks Eric. Yes my plugs do fit.
I like the caulk idea but I already have the plugs and I think using them might be less labor intensive.

Thanks Danny. I have a dremel tool bit I think will work well to clean the holes. Just to clarify, you didn’t coat the plugs with anything? And they have lasted well?
I do believe there is more than one size. Maud asked me to measure the holes to make certain she shipped the correct ones.

Hi Mark, I didn't coat them with anything. As to longevity, I only have two or three years up so far but I have no reason to expect them to fail prematurely. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl On 10 December 2020 at 11:53 Mark Erdos <mcerdos@...> wrote:

About 12:58 minutes is where it shows the new plugs. I am happy with them, they were provided by AMEL and they fit. Installed only 10 months ago. Ken Powers Aquarius Currently on the hard in Thailand. SM2K262 |

Hi we replaced all our plastic Genoa plugs last year. I had to cut about two millimetre off each one as they were too long. I used a Stanley knife which cut through them easily. Cleaning out the holes was straight forward as the old ones (18 years old) were reasonably crumbly and UV damaged. I coated each one with clear silicon and tapped them in using a wooden dowel and a hammer. Once in it was just a matter of removing any excess silicon.

We installed the polyethylene plastic plugs from AMEL, and they lasted about 12 months in mostly tropical sun before crumbling away to uselessness. Cleanly and completely removing the remaining parts after the top has sun-rotted is very tedious, and not a job we wanted to do again.
We then filled the holes flush to the top with GE SCS2000 silicone, gray (essentially identical to Dow Corning 795). Looks great, does not shrink when it cures, and has lasted 3 years without issue. Since silicones are generally UV stable, I expect this will be as close to permanent solution as can be found on a boat. If you go this route, give the upper surface of the track a good coat of wax before filling the holes. That will make the inevitable bit of thin silicone film you smear on the surface wipe off easily after it cures. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA |

As mentioned we replaced ours 12 months ago and have been cruising in Croatia, Greece and Turkey over the summer and they still look as good as the day we put them in. See the attached photo. On Sunday, December 13, 2020, 6:09 am, Karen Smith via groups.io <karenharmonie@...> wrote:

A number of our plugs were missing. We cut pieces of fiberglass sail stiffener rods of the correct diameter and put them in with adhesive. They’re been there for 5 seasons and are holding up well. Most sail lofts will have “ends” that are too short for sails, but can be used to cut the plugs.

Another solution is to fill holes with silicone. Aras Sharkli #163 1988 On Sun, Dec 13, 2020 at 12:32 PM Drew Gaffney <drew.gaffney@...> wrote: A number of our plugs were missing.
