Fw: Deck repairs for an SM ( and other Amels )

Hi Folks,
Pen Azen is 20 years old and has about 65,000 miles under her keel. On the faux teak deck she has a number of hairline cracks, hard to see unless in sunlight and about 1-2 cm long. They are in random places, a few clustered around the point where you step
off the deck into the cockpit on the starboard side. They are not structural but should be filled as otherwise water can penetrate and damage the balsa.
It's a tricky job to enlarge a crack sufficiently to fill it and the result will never look perfect.
The chap who is going to do this for me asked Amel what fibre glass they had used originally but cannot get a reply.
Has anyone carried out such repairs ? if so I would be interested to hear if they have any tips as to what they used and the finish that they managed to achieve.

Eleuthera is SM007. Being a few years older than your vessel, it had exactly the same problems. However upon purchasing the boat some six years ago, we used a product called Captain Tolley’s creeping crack cure. Still a good solution many years later. One caution; when you do the work ensure you follow the application instructions. Otherwise you’ll end up with some residue on the decks. Don’t ask... I'll second Jean-Pierre's endorsement of "Captain Tolley's (Amazing) Creeping Crack Cure" !
15 years or so on our hairline leaks of windows and still bone dry! That being said, I recall discussion from, I think, Joel, that the "faux teak" gelcoat was often painted a bit too thick and can crack, but there is a proper thickness of white under it. I suspect the cracks in the brown do not go through the underlying white, much less through the laminate and into the balsam core. Hi Craig,
The cracks we have are tiny and really only visible in sunlight, with no creaking noise when you step around them, so I think we would be unlucky if there had been any penetration down to the balsa.

We painted the decks on “Aloha” SM72 a little over 4 years ago. In our case, the cracks in the gel coat had allowed a few chunks of of the tan gel coat to chip off. We ended up grinding off all of tan gel coat prior to painting. Beneath the tan gel coat is another layer of white gel coat which was in good condition. Moral of the story is that you do not have to worry about water intrusion into the core, and what ever fix you choose will be for cosmetic purposes.
