Source of double lipped seals in the EU

ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>

A good Austrian run yacht services business in Greece is having difficulty sourcing double lipped seals for two Supermaramu genoa gearboxes ( not ours ). They normally import them from an SKF agency in Scotland.
Brexit has caught the Greek customs unawares , with massive delays and confusion in Athens.
Can anyone recommend a source for double lip seals in the EU ?

The original seals are single lipped, but these guys prefer the double lipped seals.

Hi,

I bought some for the C-Drive ingoing shaft here:

https://www.tridistribution.fr/roulements-et-paliers/29741-22186-joint-a-double-levre-din-3760-as-jl-as54-85.html

Those are according to the drawing of the C-Drive 60x90x10 (innerxouterxthickness)

Hi Ian,
I was about to comment about your mechanic (unnecessarily) wanting to use double lip seals but then got to your last sentence where you said the originals were (appropriately) single lips. Doubles are really not called for (not that they will hurt anything). The 2nd lip does not perform any sealing function whatsoever - it is simply there to keep dirt and contaminants away from the 1st lip, which does all the work. They are appropriate in really dusty and dirty environments like, say, farm equipment.  Definitely unnecessary overkill on our boats. They are only useful to allow the mechanic to charge more.

Thanks, Craig,
You're right. The guy who wants the seals said in his email that " A standard rotary oil seal with one lip will do as well "
I guess he's a belt and braces guy.

Well, not saying what you say is not true but the fact is that Amel uses a double lip seal in the ingoing shaft for the C-drive according to the drawing. Who am I to argue with the people that designed the C-Drive.

Just my two cents.

Hey Arno,
Perhaps on the 54 but not on earlier SM's, SN's etc. Do you also have an engine air intake filter? Not on the earlier models. Maybe global warming is causing more dust in the air such that engine rooms are now like farm fields. :-)

Are the dimensions the same for 54s and SMs?  Are they double lipped?

Attached is a drawing of the propeller shaft outlet of SN, SM and 54.
Dimensions of thee lipseal you will find in the drawing.

Lipseals in the given dimensions and fitted with a stainless steel spring are standard industrial stuff which should be available more or less everywhere.
Important is to grease them properly.
We changed the lipseals on our 54 in 2016. They were available in an industrial suppliers store "round the corner". Because there was some wear in the sleeve we smoothened it. There was no need for a replacement. The shaft sealing is properly working since then.

Hi Craig,

Have a look at the enclosed PDF.
As you can see it's drawn in the early nineties. It is the top end of the C-Drive and it shows clearly the double lipped seal at the ingoing shaft of the C-drive. I'm not exactly sure about the build years of the different Amels but I'm pretty sure this drawing originates from the Super Maramu-era.
As this is only a single seal my guess is they wanted to maximize its lifetime by using a double lipped seal.

And about dust in the air, you should visit Curacao at some days, lots of Sahara Dust in the air. Typically our Amel is covered in the stuff after we collect her at the end of the hurricane season. Speaking from experience that dust works its way into everything. An intake filter is always a good idea.
