Wakespeed WS500 wiring
Andrew & Kate Lamb
I found the document attached which confirmed that our leece-Neville alternator is N-Type - might be useful to others - it also reassured me that when I installed the last alternator regulator (sterling power) that I made the correct assessment then also!

Thanks, Bill thats' very helpful information. I just loaded the latest firmware update to the WS 500 (Version 2.5.0) which was revised on Revised August 10, 2022 and see that it allows you to select a configuration for BattleBorn batteries using just the dip switches. However the .txt file on the configuration for BattleBorns is highly modifiable as well once you figure it out.
I noticed in the Wakespeed Communication and Configuration guide says it is "Copyright 2022 – Dragonfly Energy" (translate BattleBorn) so I am guessing they have a special relationship that is developing. http://wakespeed.com/Wakespeed%20%20Communications%20and%20Configuration%20Guide%20v2.5.0.pdf Bob KAIMI SM429 |

Ya , I got a very prompt answer back from Leece-Neville that it was positive. Doug, I think just find a wiring diagram to confirm.
Hey Doug, I am in Deltaville at DYC on the hard. I'll email you. Bob KAIMI SM 429 |

In generic terms, to determine whether you have positive or negative excitation requires accessing the two field(brush) wires on your alternator. You may have to remove an onboard regulator (if fitted) from the back to access the field wires.
Using a multimeter, you need to determine if one of the brushes is either tied DIRECTLY to Battery+ (D+\B+ etc) or to Battery-. (B-). If one brush is connected directly to B+ then this is NEGATIVE excitation control. Alternatively if one brush is connected directly to B- then this is POSITIVE field excitation control. It can be a little tricky to determine the DIRECT connection as the rotor coil is also in the circuit. Hope this makes sense ... if not, let me know and I'll draw a picture. I had this same question when looking at the Wakespeed regulators. I’m using a mastervolt alternator and wasn’t clear how to know the positive vs negative excitation. I’m not familiar with that with respect to the field excitation.

Hi Eloi,
I'm getting ready to install my WS500. Did you take any more photos? Also, just to confirm, the Leece-Neville is positive excitation, right? Needing a WS500-PH harness with P-Type alternators (vs N-Type). Bob KAIMI SM429 |

Thanks Dan,
Now I understand. This helps a lot. @rossirossix4: I will try to make some photos and label them. Eloi, SM2K 426 RedLion |

Hi Eloi,
If you ever figure this out, please post photos with a label for each wire and any mounting ideas you have. Maybe someone else has this already. Daniel's photo is helpful but it would be good to have a "B Rousean /Nickomat" style set of instuctions and photos. I plan to do the project in a month or so. Bob, KAIMI SM 429 |

Hello Eloi,. Attached is a photo of the initial wiring with the cap removed over stator. I disconnected the internal yellow wire that was attached and that is where I attached the blue wire from the WS500. I did not cut the old yellow wire but taped it up so I could reinstall the old regulator if needed. I hope that helps. Wakespeed's customer service is very responsive (on their website). I was attaching the wires just as you and called them. Not realizing what time it was in Washington state he picked up the call as he was walking his dog at 6am. He said no problem and walked me through it on facetime. That being said I forgot exactly the exact configuration but I did have to cut out the old regulator. Good luck. Hello,
Getting a bit confused about the wiring of the WS500 to the Leece Neville. I have read all of the threads on this forum about it but I have still some questions. if I connect the "field" cable of the WS500 instead of the orange one of the original regulator, do I have to cut the internal wire to the diodes?. On the picture of Dan Carlson's installation there is a blue wire going to the middle cap, ???? I want to be sure to make no mistake. Thanks Eloi Bamberg SM2K 426 RedLion |
