Furler solenoid wiring from switch
Ben "Santorin LO"
Hi Group,
Hope all are having great covid restrictions free summer.
My new problem is that folding order (to main furler) does not reach the Solenoid (as I don’t hear the ‘Clack’), opening is ok, switch is new. I suspect that the wire got wormed or overheated due to faulty switch and need replacement.
Does anyone have an idea through where the wire is going from the switch at the cockpit to the solenoid? All I can see is that the wires are going to somewhere on port side of the compartment under cockpit dashboard and down into inaccessible area… |

Hi Santorin LO (by the way, what is your name? It is not on any of your posts.)
Before you replace wiring, I'd recommend you test the cockpit switch to see if it works for the "furl" position, as you say it works for the "unfurl" position. If so, then go to the solenoid and see if you have power there when you operate the switch in the "furl" position. That will tell you if there is a wiring problem. Also, try putting the wires from the "unfurl" terminals onto the "furl" terminals to see if you have a solenoid problem. My guess is it is not a wiring problem. Thanks Craig,
My name is Ben and just tired if having my personal details all over on line... can definitely share with you my contact and full privetly, thanks for understanding. With regards to the switch, i already took it off, and actually checked the wires directly i.e: unfurl to power and furl to power; unfurl - works, furl sparking and quiet on solenoid - so either solenoid problem or wire was overheatted due to faulty switch....as the solenoid seem intact, my giess it is somewhere on the wirring unfortunetely |

Hi Ben,
Perhaps you might detach the existing wire and run a test wire (out in the open) from the cockpit switch to the solenoid, before replacing the existing wire. Should give you a definitive answer. I'll look on my SN this afternoon to check the actual path of the wire. Craig -- Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL |

Ben,
I just checked the wiring on my SN. From the cockpit control switches the wires go down through a short pvc tube to the "floor" of the steering/autopilot/wiring compartment, then over to port, passing the autopilot motor, as you describe but then they go up to the area over the sliding ceiling access panel and head to the center of the boat in a bundled sheath (not a pvc pipe). . Then they go directly aft to the circuitry for the solenoids in the access panel in the head. I could not see if there is a conduit there, but I think there so, running between the ceiling and the underside of the deck. In the head I can see a small square opening cut in the fiberglass just above a solenoid, and the wires come out there. Hope this is helpful. Let us know what you find. -- Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL |

Thank you very much crsig, very helpfull, the idea of running test one is perfect snd the routing of the the wire in case is also clear will check it tomorrow or day after and will update.
Thanks again |

Hi Craig and All,
Just from he boat, and: a. Craig - you were right - not a wire issue. b. I was right too - not a switch issue c. An easier trick for external bybass test wire - connect the working wire from the working solenoid to the test one. d. The solenoid seem to be faulty - hooe not a big deal to get replacing one |

Glad you found it!
Shouldn't be an issue to replace - not a proprietary Amel item. -- Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL |

Ben, I believe all SNs have individual solenoids that, on command will energize the bow thruster in one direction or the other. At some point, Amel began using a single reversing switch from Albright. It is available in 12v and 24v. Since not all Santorins, SM, or any other Amel was created identical to the first one of a model, be sure that you include the Model (SN), the Year (19XX) and a photo of the part you are inquiring about. If you do this, the information you get from others may be of more use to you. If you do not, you are risking getting information that does not apply to your SN,

The manufacturer of your original was CIMA. CIMA was a manufacturer of DC motors and solenoids. I am not sure that CIMA is still in business. The biggest user of CIMA solenoids and motors was Maxwell for their anchor windlass systems. But Maxwell switched to Albright. There are probably many different solenoid switches that will work. You might need an electrician if you do not understand how they work. Here is a typical solenoid switch, and you will have one of these for each direction of thruster operation:

Hi Like Bill said, " There are probably many different solenoid switches that will work". They may be physically different. But with the same specifications, and fitting the available space, you will be ok. These parts are also used in Forklifts and Golf Carts, so you can widen your search (and save some money!). Thank you Bill and Roque,
Assuming may would do the work, i sm more bothereed about the fittings so no further modifaction is needed. I will search and let you all know |

Cima is still operational and is in Milan. But it doesn't sell to the public and says to turn to the manufacturer (I think he means Amel). I would like to buy a spare motor for the mainsail, but I couldn't find it! Martino

Saga still on...
Shaken the soleniid and put back, worked for a little while and again...lioking for a new one including at amel - amel could offer only a volvo solenoid with 2 main pins (ratger then 4 as in the old one) and did not find in shops 4 pins in this shape... anyone has an idea where to get just a similar one ? Alternativly how to use either 2 pins or double solenoud instead? I believe double one should work but couldnt figure out the wirring |
