Hi Mark, That's the way! Glad to hear the caps worked for you. I'd recommend some type of UV cover for the windlass - we've used an old fender cover, old canvas bag, etc. Unless of course you're trying to test the longevity of those caps directly. Just be aware they may fail in a way that phantom operates the windlass, which can cause big problems at the wrong times. Or may prevent proper function of the windlass when you really need it. We always keep the control breaker switch off and the windlass covered whenever we can. Also, some seal, gasket, or sealant should probably be used between the big ring/donut and the metal of the windlass. I could see that being a path for water into the electric motor housing. At any rate, hopefully you're sorted for years to come. The replacement windlass switches with rubber cover finally arrived. The rubber covers are an almost perfect fit over the original Amel switches. Here is the link for the switch on Aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/p/order/detail.html?orderId=8151556863136547 The Aliexpress switches appear to be identical to the one's Mike and Alan found in Jaycar in Australia and New Zealand: https://www.jaycar.us/5a-dc-spst-waterproof-momentary-pushbutton-switch-30mm-diameter/p/SP0732 As expected given the price, the switches are quite cheaply constructed. However, the molded rubber cover appears to made from reasonably thick rubber. Time will tell how long they will last. I will report back when they do finally succumb to UV damage. Hi Mark,
The Jaycar unit is a complete switch. It's slightly different construction to the original - probably not as good hence so much cheaper. The cap is integral with the button...if you unscrew the cap it exposes the internals of the switch. Fantastic! For the life of me I cannot find these switches or anything like it in the USA. However, I found what appears to be that exact switch sold by Jaycar on AliExpress for US$2.19 each. I ordered six (6) and with shipping the whole thing cost me a whopping US$27.38. When they arrive I will see if the rubber cap fits or not. If it does, I'll report back and will include the link from AliExpress. |

Hi Mark, I bought them in person so I don't have a link, but those look exactly right. I think the profile is slightly taller than the originals (just a couple mm). This doesn't really matter as you can still push the switch and they seal and keep the water out. If I find one still in the package - onboard or in the store - I will confirm. I used those as well...they are available from lots of places -Google is your friend. As far as i can tell there's nothing particularly special about the switches Amel used on the Lofrans windlass. AND, I have recently installed a Lofrans hand-held remote control in the port side locker. It has a curly cord that allows you to operate the windlass closer to the bow rather than having to do acrobatics with your right toe while leaning forward ! Cheers Alan Elyse SM437 |

Hi Mark, I struggled to find just the caps, though a source for them must exist somewhere. We found that the caps off of a standard, inexpensive pushbutton switch fit perfectly.
