A54 backstay and staysail and genaker blocks

Dean Gillies

Hi Ruslan,
I have not experienced any problems with twisting in practice, maybe it untwists itself when under load.
Also, I would not be happy with the diagonal run from jammer to chain-plate and laterally to the winch. The angle at the jammer is not good.

I am thinking of this run, but worrying about jammer and line angle from it.

What if it twists like this? not an issue?

"On port side bug winch is in the way and also while sheets are trimmed"

Ruslan,
On port side for the staysail sheets, you need to use a block on the mainsail backstay plate to clear the big winch. I also use a block on starboard side, mostly to make the setup symmetrical.

I use a cleat-block on the rear lifting plates for the staysail running backstay. This allows me to tension it either by hand or with a little winch action, and it then holds the tension whilst not running across the side decks as a little trip hazard.

I have always put the runner block on the outboard lifting chainplate and run the line to the winch.

However I think it works better to run it to the small mainsail backstay plate. It leaves the windward side deck free of a taught shin killer. I once walked into the tight runner and cut my shin on it! Very painful…

It is plenty strong enough. Runners should be well snug not winched super tight…really to stop any pumping of the mast.

Mine would need a hole drilled.

Kind regards

Nick

Hi Teun, there are couple things that worry me in this setup. On port side bug winch is in the way and also while sheets are trimmed I’d prefer not to close the jammer. In the case when you need to release the sheet, not everyone would remember about closed jammer.

WRT running backstays this is what I found in the Amel manual.  from last sentence (image attached) “ use a block fit on the main mast back stay u-bolt”

Hi Ruslan,

I have the Stay sail sheets running thru the fore & aft adjustable car on the applicable side on the foredeck; from there thru the “eye let” on the side of the hard dodger and then thru the jammer. I adjust the working Stay sail sheet, with the jammer OPEN via the small winch on the working side and then close the jammer when in position and take the sheet of the little winch. When not sailing or using the Stay sail it is hanging in a bundle from the grab rail on the dodger.

You must ALWAYS use the opposite (windward side) running backstay, whether using the Stay sail ONLY or in combination with the Genoa.

For the active backstay I use the block which you show in your second picture for the gray line. But I have that gray line running on the side of the dodger as explained above.

Best Regards Teun

Hi,
A54 owners, can you share please the Amel intended way how to rig backstay, stay sail, and genaker blocks?

from the user manual I found that backstay runners should be blocked to the main back stay u-bolt (photo attached). Is this what you were taught in the Amel training?

for the stay sail I found some of the pictures that show attaching a block to a Genoa block. Is this the way to go? Do you keep stay sail sheets in the jammer or take them out? The picture I’m attaching the angle suggests that the line does not run through the jammer. I assume that the grey line here is stay sail line since the grey was original color for A54 stay sail sheets.

and finally where do you attach a block for a genaker sheet?

Thanks for your input.
