Whangerei, New Zealand recommendations?

Scott SV Tengah

Hi all,

We're headed to New Zealand this Austral Summer and have a load of projects to get done. I know some of you are from NZ and many of you have been there, so I'm hoping to get some recommendations for the following projects:

1) Strip hull to gelcoat and repaint. It seems that in NZ, soda blasting is less common than sand blasting. I'd also like to get the cast iron ballast stripped and recoated. We also want to raise the waterline.

2) Building a hard top for our A54
After this thread, I'm seriously contemplating having a hard top added. The current favored design is something similar to Soleil Bleu
https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/topic/hardtop_for_amel_54/75406304?p=Created%2C%2C%2C20%2C1%2C0%2C0&jump=1

3) Replace motor mounts. Two bolts have broken on our motor mounts so the motor will need to be lifted and the remaining studs drilled out.

4) Acrylic window replacement

5) Solar electrical. We want to add more rigid solar on top of the new hard top.

Currently, we have an appointment for haul out at Norsand boatyard and they're mostly an "open boatyard" except for boatbuilding and painting. For projects requiring those tradesmen, we will need to use Norsand. If Norsand is not a good choice, I'm happy to switch boatyards.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Scott,

I have a lot of experience based in Opua/Bay of Islands and can recommend a few businesses related to your projects in case you stay up here. I'm sure others can give better tips regarding the Whangarei area (usually pronounced fuhng-uh-ray). I haven't heard of any issues at the Norsand boatyard except the tornado that ripped through in June 2020 - obviously that's out of their control. They do use a trailer/slipway method vs a travel lift. The yard is also unsealed. At least four other SuperMaramus have used Riverside Drive Marina in Whangarei (further up the river) for their haul outs recently (Quetzal, Pitu, Glazig, Perigee). It's closer to the town center but further from the marine industrial area where Norsand is located. Perhaps they can comment on their experiences.

Business I recommend in Opua:
BOI Marina boatyard or Bluefix can do bottom work - sanding, painting, etc. I'm not sure about the particle blasting tho
Opua Boat Builders or Bluefix for hardtop
Cater Marine is an excellent source for anything marine - if they don't have it in stock, they can get it in and will price match
Cam from TransMarine for anything electrical
Matt Randell from Marine Solutions Northland for engine/mechanical (motor mounts)
I know you didn't mention it, but there's also a great rigger up here that has recently done rig replacements on several Amels (including a 54). His name is Paul "Buddha" Smith from NZ Yacht Services.

Happy to discuss more and look forward to seeing you guys get here!

Cheers,
Mike Longcor

I like Riverside Drive Marina Wangarei. Very nice and friendly Marina.  No Problem with your electricity like other marinas where you are not allowed to use the electricity before you not have a certificate elektrishen that contols your yacht. Nice town and a cool barbecue area in the Marina.

I'll add that my understanding of the NZ electrical certification/electrical warrant of fitness that Heinz speaks of only applies to yachts in the water at the marinas - and only if they wish to plug the vessel into shore power. You can buy/rent pre-certified "boxes" that provide A/C outlets for onboard appliances, tools, anything you want to plug in besides the vessel itself. It seems vessels on the hard can basically do what they want regarding electricity. I'm sure each marina has its own policies on that. The electricity was "free" (included) in the hardstand fee when I was hauled out at BOI Marina in Opua in November 2020.

Ah ok so my understanding was that Whangarei was cheaper and had more/better contractors compared to Opua.

Is that not the case?

We plan to leave the boat for a few months and travel by RV so we don't care that much where the boat is.

Hi all, I am a local being based an 8 hour sail North of Opua. For convenience I get most of my work done there and there are good tradesmen there. However there is more competition in Whangarei and surprisingly I have had good work done at a good price in central Auckland near the big Westhaven Marina. Ovlov marine beat the competition by some thousands when I replaced the motor. Again, there is competition there.
Like wise I have high regard for the Bridge Marina and hardstand in Tauranga. Bruce Goodchap the manager of the hardstand is the nicest and most honest guy you could find anywhere. Very helpful too. So guys, you have choices.

Hi Scott,
You are definitely spoilt for choices in New Zealand. Spent 15 years living aboard our previous yacht in three different marinas in Auckland- (city of sails) I was also in charge of four Sail Training Craft (STC) that were maintained to a very high standard using numerous boatyards and services. Ovlov did engine rebuilds and eventually replaced all the (STC) Volvo engines in theses boats over the years. My choice would be Orams in downtown Auckland for haulout and projects. This yard does not have any shower facilities so it is not set up for live aboard. It is not the cheapest but it has all the services right there including every Marina shop you ask for. Can’t beat the location as you are in downtown Auckland and have three of New Zealand’s largest chandleries within 400m.  Like the Bay of Islands - Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf has a fabulous cruising ground.

Gulf Harbour is another good location in terms of marine services and haulout facilities. Marina costs are expensive but it has good liveaboard (showers, laundry restaurant etc) facilities

Norsand is also very good and widely used by visiting boats from overseas. I was once there when there were four other Amels hauled out. This is a good choice for live aboard on the hard. Opua has good marine services and fantastic boat club and a couple of very good chandleries, but is limited in supermarkets and you will need to go the Paihia for greater selection. My experience being hauled out there was that the yard is not sealed and once when we hauled out there the hydraulic lift burst a hose and sprayed oil all over our teak decks and mainsail.

My choices in terms of cost and live aboard would be:
1. Norsand
2. Opua

My choices in terms of location and availability of services:
1. Orams, Auckland
2. Gulf Harbour, Auckland
3. Opua

There are many other options. You need to way up what are all your needs. You will love your time in New Zealand for many reasons. Sailing, maintenance and scenery. Make sure you get the South Island.

Hi Ross, just one update to your information they sealed the Opua boat yard this year and a couple of years ago completed a huge expansion to the marina. They also have an extensive area of what are designated work berths, obviously to get work done on your boat, 45 NZ$  per night for the SM. Toilets and showers are first class and there is a big upstairs lounge for liveaboards to use.

We plan to leave the boat for a few months and travel by RV so we don't care that much where the boat is.

Thanks Danny, it has been a few years since I was last in Opua. Pleased to hear they upgraded the haulout area. I knew it was in the plan. Love those meals and social evenings at the yacht club.

Hi Ross, just one update to your information they sealed the Opua boat yard this year and a couple of years ago completed a huge expansion to the marina. Toilets and showers are first class and there is a big upstairs lounge for liveaboards to use.

Hi Scott,
You are definitely spoilt for choices in New Zealand.

Sealed means they have upgraded the haulout ground from gravel to either concrete or tar seal. I have not heard of many yards in NZ that will not allow you to work on your own boat. Many marinas do require contractors to be registered with local marinas for a number of reasons including health and safety.

Hi Ross, yes the Opua Cruising club meals are still going strong. The quality of the offering is really good now, a real step up in the last 2 years even though the people doing it  are the same. I would say their standard has lifted from cook to chef.

For environmental reasons blasting antifoul paint off was not allowed. So it was done by hand by Limbard scraper.  It was time consuming & difficult to get experienced workers).

The marina staff were always helpful but were paranoid about any flakes of antifoul paint that might end up on the ground - fines if caught.
They required big screens to completely surround the boat & tarpaulins underneath. This took 2 days to set up & frequently had to be fixed when the winds were strong. Of course, when spray painting the screens were already set up.

local painter - Simon was very good. He painted the bottom layers. (Mostly spray paint - fast)

I also considered doing the keel. I decided to wait until I could access a sand blaster.

This marina was unsealed. Rain => muddy mess - difficult to keep out of boat

I certainly would research other places to get this job done. This job is not nice & labour intensive. Can you do it in Fiji?
I am not sure - maybe soda blasting can be done in NZ but probably need to go in a shed (masts pulled)??

SOLAR PANELS
I upgraded my solar panels at Opua. I can recommend Cameron (someone else also recommended him)
This job required some welding Garth the local welder did a good job. Unfortunately can’t weld in the water without council permission so this job is best done on the hard.
