Mosquito Nets

Hello All
I'm interested to know what fellow SM owners do to keep mosquitoes out, especially at night? Are there standard screens that can be bought for all the hatches? Do you place a net over the companion way? If you're sleeping in the cockpit, what do you do? All advice gratefully received!! Rachael -- Rachael & Robin Courtenay New Amel Owners of... After many trials and
errors, we came up with these. They are made from starboard
and are now over 5 years old. I started with a solid piece and
then cut out the middle. The mesh is attached using a hot
glue. On the edge, they have a some foam to make the fit snug.
They can be installed and removed from inside the boat. They
can be stowed under a mattress when not needed.

Depending on where you plan to go, you may want to make your screens suitable for No-See-Ums. Mosquito netting is not fine enough to stop the tiny No-See-Ums and they can be just as annoying as mosquitos. No-See-Um netting does restrict airflow a little more than mosquito netting but any screens over the hatches makes airflow minimal. regarding No-See-Ums: I had good luck in New England using standard mesh screen sprayed with Deet-based clothing spray. Often a ton of tiny biting gnats in estuaries and coves during late spring. in the tropics we always use this "tool" in the night. Low noise computer fans with moskito nets that fit into the small window from the aft cabin to the cockpit (or in the bathroom or kitchen). Consumes minimal amps, no noise and makes a constant air flow through the aft cabin. No moskitos and cool nights.
the first prototype out of wood (foto on at the top) served us many years, maybe Bill and Dennis remember that, we fabricated it at the pontoon when KALI MERA, BE BE and LIBERTAD were neighbours in Marokko / Rabat :-) , we now replaced it by a more sophisticated out out of acryl with 4 fans and two speed settings. this is designed to stay there moreless always. tadeja and herbert KALI MERA, SN120, still Mexico |

Another tip that works in the Northeast at least- the tiny gnats and biting flies dislike Catnip. Pet stores and Amazon carry Capt Kitty Catnip spray. We sprayed liberally on all exposed skin dusk and dawn with excellent success.
Nontoxic, no odor, no oily feeling. I just looked on Amazon and price seems double what I remember. Best wishes, Richard Ex-every boat New Haven CT. |

Sorry for the late contribution to this thread. An inexpensive yet effective way to create port screens is to purchase the window shades for automobiles that are made with a plastic side that clings to glass on one side and a UV resistant screen that provides the shade on the other side, like these at Amazon (4 shade screens for$14.97) These are available most auto parts store. I just cut out the plastic, stitched a button in the middle, and attached thin shock cord to the button. All my ports have something (like a mushroom) just inside that I use to tie off the shock cord. The frames are so flexible you can ball them up into a bag, and the screens are too fine for no-seeums.
