Main mast gearbox.
My main mast gearbox has a gear that is now stripped. I remember that a member was able to get the gear made for them. I think that they had this done in Colombia. Does anyone have a contact to get these gears for the gearbox. In 2018 I had to buy the complete gearbox for the boom outhaul as I could not find a gear replacement Thanks Barry and Penny "SV Lady Penelope II" Amel 54.#17 Caribbean waters |

Dominique, To be clear, I believe the gear in the photo is the brass Spur Gear for a Leroy Somer gearbox. Correct me if I'm wrong. If it is: Over the years, Amel has stocked this Spur Gear and at other times chose to not stock it. The Leroy Somer gearbox was used on SM2K and early 54s. Is your information regarding this being in stock resent? And what was the price? This is my gearbox, dropped down from the furler. I haven’t taken it apart yet but from previous experience with the boom gearbox I am sure the gear teeth are stripped. I have kept the old gearbox from the boom with the hope that I could get it fixed. The boom gearbox is different from the main mast electric gearbox. Not changeable but it makes sense that the inside gear would be the same.

Bill,
Yes, it’s a Leroy Somer. My A54 is the number 16 and was launched in january 2006. I ordered one gear in july 2021 to repair my mast gear box and two gears in april 2022 (as spares) and Amel had them in stock (received 48h later) in july 2021 and april 2022. I paid 217,95 euros (+ shipping + VAT) for each brass gear. Best Dominique |

Barry, When i bought my A54 in 2017, the boom gear box failed and i didn’t find a brass gear and nobody want to make one in Greece. So i asked to Amel to sell me a complete gear box. (High price). It’s difficult to change the gear but it’s possible. Dominique |

History shows that those who added grease to these Leroy Somer gearboxes actually got more life from the gearboxes. This suggestion was first made by Danny Simms, SM owner about 12 years ago. There is plenty of history that proves that this is a very good idea, especially if you do this BEFORE the gear is worn. The total cost of materials to do this is less than 50 € and the time to do this job is less than 1 hour. When you compare the cost of the replacement of the gearbox, it is a good investment.
