Outhaul noise
My outhaul winch has developed a screeching noise - see the attached video I've confirmed the noise does not originate from the outhaul car. I've opened up the plastic box containing the motor and gear box and cannot see a problem. The whole thing was serviced just. a couple of months ago. It is possible that the outhaul was overloaded recently since the rod inside the mast on which the sail furls has a bend in it. Does anyone have a suggestion what may be wrong?

Hi Joerg
I recently had the same screeching noise on my outhaul. I found out that my outhaul sheet was tighten too much. I guess sometime ropes are shrinking a bit with salt water over time? After I released the outhaul sheet the noise just disappeared

I had the same noise. I took the line off and soaked it in a fresh water bucket tied under the boom. Sound went away. Thanks everyone for the advice. I've had the tight outhaul line problem in the past and the current issue is different. i've taken off the outhaul line completely and when operating the motor, the screeching noise is still there albeit somewhat attenuated because there is no load at all. Does anyone have a technical drawing of the motor assembly or some good photographs? It sounds like either there's no grease on one of the bearings or a bearing is damaged. Many thanks! Joerg

Hi Joerg, When we bought Ocean Pearl in 2008 she had that screeching. It was caused by dried up grease in the gearbox. I stripped them, cleaned out the old grease repacked them with new. I dont remember if the bearings needed replacing but I guess so as they would have been the source of the screech. That was when I installed grease nipples so I would never have that problem again. I think many owners have followed suit since.
Kind Regards
Danny
