Hurth HBW-250-3R transmission leak

James Alton

Hello,
Recently the Hurth HBW-250-3R transmission on my Maramu has developed a slight transmission oil leak.  The leak is clearly located in the shifting arm shaft, the output shaft seal is dry.
There does not seem to be any binding in the shift linkage since when in either forward or reverse the shift arm can be easily moved a very slight amount.  Has anyone else had to deal with
this leak issue and if so what parts/seals were needed?  I am currently cruising the Southern coast of Turkey and anticipate soon moving up the Western coastline.  Can anyone recommend
someone that could supply parts or perform service on this transmission in Turkey?

Thanks,
James Alton

Hi James,

just I had a look in my Volvo dealer locator app and found out following service points in your region (Marmaris and Fethiye?):

- Marmaris: Bogazici Marin Teknik Tur (www.bosphorusmarine.com)

- Göcek: West Marin Arif Cuvalci (www.westmarinetr.com)

- Fethiye: Voltech Marine Yatcilik Deniz Malz ( www.voltechmarine.com)

Hope this helps. Thea are VP dealers, so i presume they are very familiar also with hurth transmissions gear.

just for my personal info, we are looking forward going cruising in this region later in sept and oct: how is wind weather and local administrators? From now on they will privatize mooring boys in gulf of Gocek and Fethiye. No more anchoring and also paying mooring fees on local subcontractors? thanks for your feedback, very appreciated.

Best wishes and fair winds.

Hi James,

You just need to replace the lip seal (sorry I don't know the size - can check). I did this by removing the shifting arm shaft. Hopefully the attached photos help. I used some gasket maker/RTV when mounting it back on the gearbox.

Mike,

Thanks a lot for quick response and for the excellent photos\ information, that is exactly what I needed! It looks like I should be able to handle this work without even pulling the transmission.  Knowing the seal size could be helpful if I end up having to match it up but I will first try to source a seal kit for this transmission.

James,

Can not help with a supplier in Turkey, but I can tell you that unlike the output shaft seal, leaks from the seal on the actuating arm are easily fixed.

According to my parts list the actual seal is 001.106.0155  That's that part number in the from the old HBW catalog, which is all I have. The identical transmission is now sold by ZF as the ZF25M.  The ZF catalog should be more current with the part numbers than the old Hurth numbers, but these have been through a number of iterations hopefully your local dealer can trace them back.  When repairing this seal, I have always just bought the entire assembly (947.53.610.02) just in case the issue is with one of the hard parts instead of the seal itself.

Just a quick reminder for the group, because confusion comes up a lot, this is the ZF25M transmission that in the Super Maramus was used on the Volvo engines, the ZF25 is a completely different beast, and was used on the Yanmars.

Ulrich,

We will be back in Gocek tomorrow and will visit West Marin to see if they can help with parts, thank you.

To your questions.  We have been cruising the Turkish Southern Coast for the last several months.  We did not arrive until Nov. of 2021 so have not been here during a September so far.  I can tell you that the summer this year while hot has not seen record temperatures in the areas we have sailed from Datca to Antalya.  We found cooling daily sea breezes along much of the Southern coast.   The winds thru the summer so far have been pleasant and fairly predictable.    I don't recall any rain since last May but it is about to start according to the last extended forecast I saw.

We were last in the Gocek area July 11th and at that time there were boats anchored in the harbour and all thru the Islands South of Gocek.  There were only a small number of mooring balls in this region but quite a few more bollards placed along the shoreline for stern tie off.  I would think that eliminating the right to anchor in this region would have significant economic impacts and so far I have not heard that an outright ban is about to happen.  I may have more current information tomorrow.

Hi James,  I remembered this because I bought the Honda part (it was $5 from a Honda cycle shop rather than $36 for ZF) but I had a bit of trouble finding the orignal post which was from Gary Wells in 2019 but it might solve your issues....here it is--

"Arthur, I had the same leak and if it is coming from where there shifter shaft enters the transmission it is an easy fix as well.I drained the fluid from the bottom drain plug then undid the one bolt that holds the shift lever in place.
It comes off easily and there is a small lip seal that can be popped out.
The measurement are on the seal and I ordered a couple of replacement items from a Honda motorcycle shop :) That replacement stopped the leak and has held for four years now.
The info I have is that the seal is 20mm ID, 26mm OD by 4mm thickness. The Honda part number is 91262-GBF-831
I keep those white oul-absorbent cloth "diapers" spread out under the engine and transmission (and in the genset pan) so I can quickly see if any oil is getting loose.
Best of.luck!!"  https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/message/49057

Also, maybe someone else already made the suggestion but since you are in Gocek you could check with Riza at Emek Marine cagdas@...
