Balls for Antal deck cars

Nick Newington

Inspecting my Antal deck cars I note the white ball bearings are crumbling and the brown still good. I guess that the Brown are the Torlon ones and the white are Delrin. I have measured 6mm.

Can anyone confirm that they are 6mm?
Also is there are reason not to change the white for brown, other than cost?
Lastly it looks like one can unscrew corner plates to change the balls; any advice appreciated…
Kind regards

Hello Nick,

The balls are 6.5 mm (Delrin or Torlon).
It is easy to change them (I did it in a few minutes) BUT BE CAREFUL, they just want to roll on the deck and go in the water!
You just have to remove a plate at one end and change the damaged balls one by one, to make the damaged balls come to the end of the Antal deck car, you put the plate back without screwing it and you make the trolley slide on the rail.

This is one of those strange things involving the 1/4" ball. I think the British were the first to use these synthetic bearings and they used a 1/4" ball which is technically 6.35mm. Torlon is better than Delrin for these.

Nick,

I bought them in France, Lewmar balls, 6.4 mm, in packs of 100.
Here is the link

Torlon (brown) balls have a much higher crush strength than Delrin, but are also more expensive.  This is why many of these cars came from the factory with Torlon balls on the bottom races which are under load, and Delrin on the upper.  A few pennies saved.

You can use Torlon everywhere, but not Delrin.  At the retail level the price difference is not significant.

As has already been suggested, these are 1/4 inch balls that are variously marketed in the metric world as 6.4mm, 6.5mm, or 6.35mm.

You should have a small piece of track onboard that will allow you to remove and reinstall the car without sending balls everywhere.  And the corner plates allow the balls to be removed and installed.
