Code Zero ?

Alex Lomakin

Dear Amelians,

I keep learning about my “new” SM2000 and as a part of this process I have recently dug out for the first time a sail, which has never been used by the previous owner.

I am currently moored next to a sailmaker’s workshop, where they make a new bimini for me, so I brought the sail over to them for inspection and their guess was that the sail in question was code zero, but, to my certain surprise, they did not know:
- what the plastic part attached to the head of the sail was
and
- whether the rope sewn into the sail was a bolt-rope to use the sail instead of the genoa, which, if this is the case, needed to be taken down, or it was some sort of a torsion rope designed to provide a better shape when the sail was in use.

Please take a look at the attached picture and advise.

Thank you very much and have a great w/e.

Alex

Dear all,

I do really appreciate your quick and efficient response.

I have one more question on my “newly discovered” ballooner or, to be more specific, on the white plastic slider attached to the head of the sail: is it there simply to ease fitting of the sail into its track or it needs to be rigged to the halyard?

Thank you very much,

Alex

Hi Alex,

You need to read the hoisting and dousing instructrions carefully.
Your head foil should ahve 3 slots in it. Your genoa should be in the rightmost slot.
The ballooner is pulled up the leftmost slot by the loop in the halyard skipped over the white slider.
When the slider reaches the top it will "click" at the top swivel and lock in place .
The halyard can then be lowered (it's like and endless loop).
You should have another slider that looks like the one on the sail.
Toi douse the ballooner, you hoist this slider with the halyard tied on, in the middle slot, which unclips the slider at the top of the ballooner and it comes down.
Pull down the halyard attached top the cenbtre slider and you're done .

Cheers

Alex,

There is a lot on your boat that are "special" details that make an Amel better than an average sailboat.  The downwind rig with the "ballooner sail" is one of them.

The details on rigging are included in the manual you should have received with the boat.  If you do not have a printed manual for your SM2000, there is a copy in the files section of this board.  It is a vital reference book, you should study it carefully.

Until then, here is a short write-up on the hows and whys of the downwind rig that makes no pretense on a complete instruction sheet, but rather just a overview.
