I did a run from Sanremo to Port Saint Louis in 20-30 knot winds, on beam reach, broad reach, and downwind runs with seas running over a meter and a half. I did a few speed checks and consistently got 130Mbps or better. Didn’t do any video calls while underway, but did not experience any obvious dropouts. I was highly impressed!

Cheers,

Ours worked, uninterrupted, from Greece to Sicily.
Game changer.

Hi Matt, what were the sea conditions on your trip?  I assume you have the “mobile” RV setup?  Where did you install the flat antenna?

Do you all have the standard antenna or the "in motion" antenna?

I assume none of you paid $10k USD for the maritime version? :)

I have the same. It does have tracking motors, but due to the flat antenna technology, it does not have to constantly search in order to keep a signal tracking on a specific focal point. All you have to do is plug in the cable and let the antenna do its thing.

I attached a fishing rod holder to the aft railing and used the Starlink Pole Mount on top of that. Works like a charm.

When the boat was hauled out and turned around several times as the travel lift wound its way through the yard, it did confuse the dish a bit. I ultimately had to tell the system to stow the antenna then restarted the modem and unstowed the antenna. From that point it reoriented and allowed me to host the last group meeting. In that instance, I was not only hosting the zoom call, but also streaming Sue’s presentation from her online platform and sharing it on the call. A lot of up and downloading there, and it worked just fine (okay, I was absolutely stationary then).

Having dealt with large dome installations on superyachts I’d captained before, I can assure you that this is an absolute game changer.

Just a quick FYI tip to any Australian members here .... Starlink hardware is hugely discounted in Australia only for a brief period only (till the end of December 2022) as part of Starlink's push to open up their Australian market. The price is just AU$ 450 (US$305) instead of the standard $924, and delivery to us was just 14 days from the US direct. Order the RV version so you can stop and start the monthly service charges as required. When shipped the AU$174 monthly payments are automatically activated so you need to immediately go into your account when you receive a shipping notification where you can easily "pause" the monthly fee till the month you require the service.

Global Hardware & Monthly Costs Price Research (7-11-22)

AUSTRALIA - $924  $450 & $US174pm          à        (A$450 & A$174 PM)

USA - $599 & $US135pm                                à        (A$926 & A$209 PM)

CANADA - C$759 & C$170pm                        à        (A$870 & A$195PM)

UK – 460 POUNDS & 95P pm                         à        (A$815 & A$168PM)

IRELAND – E495  & E105 pm                          à        (A$765 & A$162PM)

NZ - NZ$1040 & NZ199 pm                             à        (A$952 & A$182PM)

Same 50% discount applies in NZ until the end of the year. 520nzd or about $333 usd.

I am very close to just buying it even though we plan to travel overland in NZ for a few months and won't be using it.

My intent is to use it in the Tropical South Pacific and SE Asia next year. That plan, of course, is dependent on Mr. Musk sticking to his 2023 timeline to provide service to the islands. Further, the T&Cs say you cannot change continents and I'm unclear if Mr. Musk considers NZ as Oceania and therefore the dish won't work in the tropical SP and Asia.

We bought our SL in the US and brought it to Europe. Works fine, and continuously from Greece to Sicily.

So far, changing continents didn’t affect function.
