Windlass cone lubrification yes or no?

Geoff Kidd

Apologies everyone. I just found the greasing instruction.

Will try to do better next time.

Geoff Kidd

May I check please whether the same thing applies for the Quick DR4 Dylan R4 series winches on the 55s, as there is no mention of greasing the clutches in their User's Manual?

Many thanks to all of you for your detailed answers.

Take home message for me : lubricate and clean every three months or if you see that free fall is not as free as it should.

Best regards

Denis

David,

Ordinarily when somebody asks about using TefGel or its close cousins as a lubricant I just say, "NO!" but this is a special case.  TefGel or Tef45 would probably work fine in this case. A very low speed, and high pressure application, it seems like this type of material would work well.  It's expensive, but a couple drops will do you!

I use Lubriplate 130-AA, but that's because I use that in my MaxProp and I already have it on board.  I make no claims that it is "best" for this application, only that it is adequate if renewed every 3 months.

FYI, I use MareLube TEF45 for lubing the friction cones on our windlass -- I also use this product to lube the threads on the SS turnbuckles on our rig to avoid 'galling' (so called "cold welding", or seizing of the threads due to excessive friction and heat build-up between two moving metallic surfaces).

I understand that TefGEL would do the same job (?).

Lubrication?  YES!  We clean and grease ours every 3 months.

You WANT the clutch to slip at high loads other wise you WILL break things that are expensive to repair/replace.  Think about an anchor that is tightly lodged in the bottom, and you have pulled the chain in until it is vertical. You are waiting for it to break free, then a passing boat's wake lifts the bow. If the clutch doesn't slip, something else WILL give.

Corrosion X grease would be fine, the liquid not at all. This is a good place for a grease rated for "high pressure" which will resist being squeezed out from between the cones, but anything is better than nothing.

Just waterproof grease works well...do it often, it's not a big task.
My concern would be that if you use something too slippery the windlass will slip too easily.
Lofrans recommend grease.

Dennis. See below. Don’t use the Corrosion X oil, use this instead if you want the thick lubricity of a grease and the corrosion protection of Corrosion X. It’s worked great for us.

Thanks I will start by applying some Corrosion X on one of the two cones to see if the slipping is not happening under medium load.

Lofrans and Lewmar suggest grease. I suggest grease. You want the cones to slip under heavy loads or the key will bend and jam.

Hello Bill,

Do you advise putting some corrosion X on the friction cones of the windlass to get a good free fall? Or is it a bad idea leading to slipping in high load circumstances.

Thanks

Denis
