Maramu mizzen tension

Karl,

As I stated, for the Super Maramu the number on the PT-3 is 10.  I would assume the Maramu is about the same, but we all know assuming is never something to bet the farm on.  Bill R, Olivier, Joel or any of the other wise men know how the tension of the back stays differs between the Maramu and the Super Maramu?

Good afternoon Paul,
Thanks for responding to our little predicament. I've got the same tension gauge and just need the specific number for Maramu backstays.
My main concern is that I don't want to over tighten and add excessive compression loads to her mizzen support in the cockpit. Or stress anything else.
   Thank you, Karl

Karl,

If you can locate another boater in your area that has a Loos PT-3 gauge, the tension for a super maramu should read approximately 10 for the mizzen backstays.  That data comes from a 'cheat sheet' I photographed when we had our rigging tuned by Vance & Underwood in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I'm sure Bill R or one of the other wise members would know if the Maramu tension should be the same or slightly higher/lower than the SM.

A fair number of sailors own one of these tension gauges.  Not sure where you are but you may get lucky finding someone in your area or if the kitty allows, you can purchase one for about $220 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Loos-Cableware-Tension-Gauge-Metric/dp/B007FJYH9O

I ended up purchasing one so I could periodically check the tension on most of the rigging.  The thickest cable this model can be used for is 10 mm.

Oh if only I was confident in my muscle memory. I just want to make sure that I don't over tighten.

Good morning all,
We just had our bottom paint done and the yard needed to disconnect the mizzen backstays for the travel lift
We now have two different tensions on them which both seem looser than before. Would anybody know the appropriate tension for these or could recommend a rigger near Annapolis MD?
   Thanks, Karl
