Hollow Rudder

My boat is out of the water getting some bottom work done. I have observed that the rudder is hollow and there are openings at the metal hinges that allows sea water into the void. This seems strange to me. Is this normal, or something that needs to be fixed? Please see the attached picture.

Peggy the Amel uses a water ballasted rudder. The holes are normal and should not be blocked

The rudder is hollow on my Santorin too (courtesy of Henri's design), but the hole is on the base of the rudder blade. I use a thin stick to poke it clear to let the water drain. I'm not sure what the screw head is in the picture unless it is one of the bolts on the hinge.

Hi Peggy, neither you nor John mentioned the drain hole in the bottom of the rudder. It gets all those unaware of the Amel method excited when they see water running or dripping out of the bottom. It can get blocked by shellfish and or mud and should be cleaned with a screwdriver. I always rinse the cavity with a hose.
Kind regards

Regarding the "screw head in the picture" Is that the screw that ultimately leads to a grounding strap?  I think in Bill's manual (page 314) regarding rudder packing he talks about sealing that to prevent salt water from passing up the copper strap and creating a green stain.  He suggests caulking it.  I'm not sure where the other bolt is.  I have a bit of the green stain near my rudder so I guess I better figure this out.

Hello all,
Is this where the drain hole is supposed to be. I have two zinc on the opposite side of the rudder. I am wonder if the drain hole got filled in by the previous owner.

Hi Peggy. No that is not the drain hole. The hole is in the bottom surface underneath. It is about 1/3 from the front. The hole can get clogged with shell fish and mud and not be obvious to the eye. There should be the two zincs on opposite sides of the rudder.
