A54 docking plan and hull support for Keel Foot repair/repaint
Hi All
I need to epoxy/repaint my A54 Keel-Foot. Therefore the boat yard is asking for a docking-plan, and if we can dock the A54 supported on the Yard without the Keel Support, if this is possible at all?
I tried to find out in the owners manual how we can support the A54 on a boat yard for painting the Keel Foot (sole). There is no docking plan in the documentations. I asked SAV for such a document; - how and where to support the boat-hull without the bottom keel support in order to re-paint the Cast-Iron with Epoxy and further. I have no answer yet and maybe someone of you did it, or has the experience doing so.
Any successtions?
Best regards

Hi Reudi,
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the question. The Keel can be worked on with the boat set on normal stands in the yard. The height of the stands can be adjusted so you can have adequate access under the keel.

I know that when every SM and every 54 was in production at Amel, the boat was suspended by cables attached to chainplates, but these boats were not rigged or loaded. I am not sure of the maximum vertical force the chainplates were designed for, although several of us have used this method to lift onto a transport ship.

Hi rudolph,
Yes. My previous owners told me and showed a photo (attached) of using the lift padeyes near fore and aft side stays for extraction of the boat by crane when no sling travel lift is available. My A54 manual describes this also (don't have that here at the office). You could lift the boat from here and paint the keel-foot.

Thank you Bill, Nick, Mohamad et all,
I agree with your comments and I was somehow sure not to support the boat on the hull solely without support on the keel. But the yard asked because it’s too long time to keep the boat on the slings to apply epoxy multiple times before copper-coat.
The best option is as Nick mentioned, to have blocks of wood and when fully dry move the wood blocks to get access to the unpainted section. The keel sections needs to be dry as well before painting and the best is to move wood support around while sanding, painting, etc.
Thanks and best regards

Hi Ruedi,
We just completed that exact same job this week. Our process was to hold the boat in the travelift slings while the iron ballast was blasted and coated with 2 solid coats of International 954 epoxy it was then set down on blocks once the epoxy had set and we proceeded to complete the antifoul and buffing/polishing/waxing in the usual way. Priming and antifouling of the areas obstructed by the blocks was done in two stages. We managed to coordinate with the yard a day with no other lift bookings to allow us time in the slings. (That however was like herding cats).
