Creaking mizzen boom

Neil Meyrick

When under sail I've noticed a fairly loud creaking noise that comes from the mizzen boom as the boat moves. Is this an indication that the bungee for the topping lift needs to be replaced, or is there another place that I should be looking for the cause of this noise?

actually when the bungees wear out there usually is less noise check the pullies the topping lift runs under.  Sometimes these become very salt covered and start to squeak a good rinse and sometimes some lube will usually improve the situation

Great, thanks Courney I will give that a try

The creaking can be simply the sheave for the mainsheet and/or outhaul. Try some lubricant. I do not think you will get rid of all of the noise because some of it will originate from lines over sheaves and winch drums when the line gets tight.
It will ensure you are awake on night watches.😀

Has anyone replaced these sheaves? I have probably dumped a liter of lube (one drop, grease, everything slippery I can find on the boat) over the last two years and the noise goes away for a short period and comes right back.

Since this didn't occur in the first few years of ownership, I assume that means the sheaves have a bit of wear from all the UV damage. I asked Maud and they don't offer them. I'm in NZ now so considering just taking the old delrin ones to the machine shop and getting them replicated.

But perhaps some of you have found an off the shelf exact replacement from Ronstan, etc.?

Thanks Bill for the info as always - and thanks Scott for reassuring me that this is not likely to go away any time soon!

I’ll certainly have a go at cleaning and lubricating the sheaves but just knowing that it is a normal part of the boat’s living and breathing and not a sign of impending problem is great

Neil, we found that the creaking was coming from the boom sheave. But why? After a close look we found that the out-haul line was too stretchy and the sheave was facilitating that.
There is always this balance between too stretchy and no stretch at all (dyneema). We switched to dyneema at the end.

Hi all, be aware that salt accumulates despite rain and it pays to rinse all moving parts with fresh water before applying lubricants like silicone spray. It even gets into the furling swivels at the top of the mast. This can be significant in that it can increase the load on the foil when Furling.

Hi Sott,
I replaced the sheaves on my SM. I think the most important is to repolish the axles. After this, oiling the sheaves last again 1 season, before it was just 1or 2 weeks.
