problem with main sail furler tube

Dears

I had more than one time an unpleasant experience with the SM main sail . The lower part of the furler tube of the main sail has come off from its place inside the mast during sailing upwind .  To keep it again inside the mast we putted the bow in the  wind than with a big effort, manually , we lowered the main sail strongly puling it down.

This action pulled down also the swivel that has bring back the tube inside the mast .

I don’t think ( and I hope) that this problem could be  determined by a reduced resistance of the main mast that could generate a higher deformation of the mast slot with the exit of the furler tube .

This summer I had again this problem and I find that the main sail clew ring was  wrongly connected ( by the wite rope)  to the main sail clew ring  on the furler tube,  although this happened with the little reduced surface of the main sail  indeed with  the sail little rolled on the tube.

After this episode I attached again the lower part of the  main sail on the master tube in what I think is correct mode and the furler tube is remained inside the must also sailing upwind with reduced and full main sail .

Please do you have some suggestion and idea on this problem .

Thanks

Marco, is it possible that the Foil Profile is broken and no longer attached? If the following is what you have, contact me for the procedures to repair it. It is not difficult.

Thanks Bill .

The profile is not broken, and it turns in a right way .

Indeed, once you have brought the profile again inside the mast it continues to work in a correct way . W are very carefully in turning it for reducing the main sail. We leave the  main sail sheet and go to the wind to avoid any  pressure on the sail surface during the turning. I am wondering if the profile is little bit squeezed and so that it is easier for it to came out. I hope this is not the case .

Cheers

Marco

Marco,

I do not understand how the profile can come out of the hub. It is normally secured with a bolt.

Post a photo of yours.

Bill I will look for the photo. The profile comes out  form the mast at the below the   lower spreaders. The force exerted by the profile probably  induce a deformation of the mast slot  so that the profile exits. Do you know if is possible that  our  profile has a diameter a bit smaller than the usual ones?

Thanks

Marco

Marco,

This makes no sense. See the drawing below. If the profile comes out of the mast below the lower spreaders, it must be less than 26mm. The SM Profile is 35mm

Something has changed on your SM.

Hi Marco..
Are you saying the foil is BENDING mid way up the mast - coming out of the slot -  and pulling the base out of its housing at the bottom?

This seems like an explanation but is confusing to me.  I don't understand it.  Maybe someone can explain it.

I think what Marco is trying to say is that his mainsail bolt rope is coming out of the foil slot near the lower spreaders. The foil might have a wider than normal slot in this position, perhaps as a result of a repair to the foil?

Derick. BRAVA SM400

Or, the sail is original and old with a collapsed bolt rope, or someone made a mainsail without the correct size bolt rope.
