SM Aft cabin mattress dimensions and boat mattress suppliers

Neil Meyrick

Hi, we're looking to replace the aft cabin mattress on our SM with a made to measure memory foam mattress. We have the two bed layout, which we use mainly as a double with the fill in piece. We both have dodgy backs and are used to using a Tempur-pedic at home.  For the last 6 months we've used a memory foam topper over the standard mattress, but this doesn't quite fit and tends to shift around.

We have line drawings on the boat of all the other beds, so it feels like there should be drawings of this mattress out there somewhere and I don't want to re-invent the wheel, particularly as the mattress cushions have an irregular curve.

Also if anyone has experience of a boat mattress company in Europe that they can recommend that would be great to hear

Thanks
Neil

I have a drawing of SM mattresses, except for the aft cabin. I am hoping someone else can help.

Greetings,
You might consider Ikea. It looks like there is one close to you. They will deliver to you and you can cut to shape.

All the best!

Thanks Bill, that looks like the paper I have in hard copy, but I can’t see the aft cabin berth dimensions on there? Is there a second sheet I can’t see for some reason?

Charles thanks for the ikea tip, we’ve done that in the past on our canal boat but with an electric carving knife, but the missus is pushing for something more finished this time!

Neil,

Like I said, "SM mattresses, except for the aft cabin. I am hoping someone else can help."
I assume there was more than 1 page, but I never had it. The other page would have shown the 2 different configurations for the aft berths.

Ah, sorry Bill got you now - I thought your text was quoting me!

I’m surprised this has not come up, looks like we will have to make a template in that case. I’m happy to share that once we are done in case it helps anyone else, although I now gather from Drew that our boat may have had non standard dimensions specified by the original owner

Artisans Custom Mattress Inc in Saginaw, Michigan has the aft cabin mattress template for Super Maramu #422. It fit perfectly. We used 8 inch tempur-pedic memory foam.

Hi,

We made a template ourselves using paper and had a mattress made to measure. It was not cheap, but I can’t remember how much.

The company we used was Cocomat, a Greek company.

We are very happy with it. I expect any good mattress company could do the same.

I’ve attached a link to their  website.

Best regards,

Just something to be aware of, that we have seen on a number os SM aft cabin mattresses.  Several have been ordered without regard to the use of the leeboards.  It is easy to end up with one so thick that the leeboards no longer fit as designed.

Its possible that this is of no matter to you, but if functional leeboards are important in the aft cabin, be careful on the thickness of the mattress you install!
