Windlass Goblins
Thomas Kleman
So, while cruising the Tuamotus (among the last places you want windlass failure), we experienced windlass failure. After eliminating switches and power as suspects, that left the original 1200 w motor. Opened the back to expose the brushes and carbon was everywhere. So I blew compressed air into it to get the carbon out, sprayed corrosion-x everywhere, and thought I was done. The pan head screws holding the motor together wouldnt budge despite extreme force so this was the limit of my intervention. Put it back together and no joy.
Then I escalated. Actually removed the motor. The worm drive came with it and the slightly overfilled contents of the windlass (90 weight oil) leaked out. More force on the pan head screws, no luck. But removed the brushes, sanded them, and emptied a lot of gumout into the motor. Much better result in terms of stator cleaning since I still couldnt access it. Ta-da. Working nicely again. But when I get burned like this I buy spares. The 1200 w motor is not made anymore. Its now the 1500 w motor. And Im learning that this motor can be used as a replacement genoa furler motor ? Not 100 pct sure of that but sounds interesting as an expensive duel purpose spare to have. Thomas Kleman SM2K 422 Tuamotus |

Hi Thomas. Having just replaced both motors, I can shed some light on this. The new Tigress motor is indeed 1500w and is slightly longer than the 1200w. It fits into the windlass just fine. The Genoa furler is another issue. The 1500w motor would be too long to fit into the cast aluminum housing, but the 1200 fits (barely). Since it’s not made anymore, a 1000w Lofrans motor (made by Sima I believe) fits into the furler well. The rub is that the original worm gear receptacle which mates to the motor is 14mm (5mm keyway) and the drive shaft for the Lofrans motor is 17mm (4mm key). Definitely not insurmountable problems, but not a drop in replacement. Stu Holmes SM2k 373 “Oyai” On Dec 13, 2022, at 12:53 AM, Thomas Kleman <lorient422@...> wrote:

Hi Thomas, I commiserate with you regarding timing of failures. But I do enjoy the challenge of finding solutions.
We were leaving Savusavu in Fiji some years ago and went to drop anchor nearby to be ready for a morning departure and the anchor windlass wouldn't drop the anchor.
I will ever be grateful it failed on the drop, we were in 60 feet of water. Back to the port and a mooring.
Pulled the cover off and got to the brushes, Salt water had got in and rusted away one of the brush holders. I went ashore and found a workshop that fixed electrical things as only in remote places they fix things.
They directed me to a box on a cluttered bench at the back. There were brush holders, brushes and all sorts from all sorts of motors by the dozen. I rifled through and found one similar and was able to modify it to fit. It worked. When I got back to NZ I got a new motor but I went for the 1000 watt motor because I don't believe in brute force to pull anchors, preferring the tug tug method to free them.
Kind Regards
Danny

Stu- thanks for the info. So you had the 1000 w motor shaft machined ? And do you have the part number on the motor ? There are a few 1000 w 24 v motors, some with the rounded triangular 3 screw mounting and others with a round mounting. Or if you remember what windlass the 1000 w motor was made for that would help.

Hi Thomas: Sorry for the delay in replying. To answer your questions…. I can’t take any credit for this conversion of the Genoa furler to accept the windlass motor - SM 373 came that way and I’m glad for it. I haven’t taken the gearbox apart to see the internal modifications (if any). The worm gear receptacle is 17mm to match the motor drive shaft and the key and keyway are 4mm. I suspect the previous owner who made this modification took the worm gear to a machinist to alter the receptacle to match the 1000w Lofrans motor. When I was in need of a replacement motor, on a hunch, I simply took out my Tigres motor (1200w) and miraculously, it fit perfectly. Mounting plate was the same, drive shaft, keyway - everything. The only thing that’s a tight fit is the motor itself into the cast aluminum housing. It still works and seals, but the foam on the end/inside of the aluminum housing is compressed slightly. The 1000w fits better. I did order a spare 1000w Lofrans motor and I did that in the Canary Islands. My Spanish isn’t great and the guy helping me could speak limited English. In the end the motor that arrived wasn’t a good fit, so I can’t provide you with a part number - sorry. The mounting plate was wrong (but I had saved the dead motor and swapped in the mounting plate from that one). The mounting plate is the triangle one, but the bolt spacing is obviously important. The 1200w original motor in the Tigres fits perfectly - so there is definitely a 1000w motor that will work, I just haven’t found it yet. The connections were also wrong - the proper motor has 3 terminal posts, but the spare I had ordered came with long wires sticking out of it. Doable, but not ideal. Only when I opened up the rebuild kit I had bought (from the original fabricator who made these furlers), did I realize my furler gearbox had already been modified to accept a standard windlass motor. The worm gear receptacles for my furler and Mr Vignando’s were quite different. His was 14mm diameter with a 5mm keyway, and mine matched the windlass motor with a 17mm diameter and 4mm keyway. See the photos below: The top photo show Mr Vignando’s OEM replacement motor next to my dead motor that came out of my Genoa furler. The bottom photo shows them facing each other and you can tell the drive shaft is very different. The mounting plates were identical in their bolt spacing luckily. I hope this helps, Stu Holmes SM2K 373 “Oyai” On Dec 13, 2022, at 5:53 PM, Thomas Kleman <lorient422@...> wrote:
