SM Wetted Surface Area

Tilo & Jeannette Peters

Has anybody calculated the wetted surface area of the Super Maramu? We’ve stripped the gelcoat off our boat and have to build up five coats of barrier coat/epoxy primer plus bottom paint (definitely considering copper coat). In my investigation, I find that different products have different coverages and I’d like to calculate order quantities in a manner that I’m not paying for too much overage—and certainly not running short.

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a good anti-osmosis barrier coat available in Europe? I hear good things about Interprotect 2000E, but it appears only to be available in North America.

Thanks,

Tilo

Hu Tilo

Talk to Michael Fleiss : https://www.fleiss-yachtzubehoer.de
I used him for my SM GrosDoux.

He has all the answers and good prices as well.

Hello Tilo,
I don’t have information regarding wetted surface but recommend caution considering
Copper coating. The application parameters must be adhered to very strictly or you will spend much for very poor results. I unfortunately had this experience a few years ago on my A54 and now use regular anti fouling (international micron) with much better results. The warranty given by Copper Coat is not valid when application parameters are not met…which seams to be always the case in their views…

Hi Tilo, on my Sharki after 31 years I scratched the hull down to the gel-coat, then I gave 2 coats of epoxy (like West System) and then 6 coats of International Gelshield anti osmosis.  Then a primer and traditional antifouling.
After 11 years from this treatment the hull is still perfect, without any trace of osmosis.

Just one user’ view.
Ocean Hobo is on her third round of Coppercoat. We did the second ourselves in Trinidad in 2014 after having the hull taken back to gel coat. This year we had 4 more coats applied on top of our existing Copper Coat by our local boatyard (sanded and properly prepped).
We’ve never had a problem with it, we get a bit of slime which easily scrubs off. It has served us well.
